I’ve seen ‘megapixel camera’ direct inserts, eight up on a single PPT frame. Users say ‘Hmmm it did seem a bit sluggish!’

Hi Tom,

I’ve had the same issues when I’ve captured down converted hd directly from my 350 into FCP – not sure whether I’ve tried it in FCS2 yet though.

It amazed me that it seems to take an age to ‘spool’ along the disk! I assumed it was an apple firewire protocol thing.

Working in a large Health Institution I get the IT guys to pass over all the IDE drives that they seem to replace on a such regular basis. They fit a treat in Beta tape cases and I archive/backup to those.

Being older drives they are probably not too reliable and for anything approaching ‘misson critical’ I’ll double up but it’s a free solution for me.

We’ve got one Iconix, nice camera but plumbed in permanently on a refractive laser system and recording uncompressed HD via its HD-SDI straight to HDD drives.

We looked at the Iki HD-20 but apart from being very pricey it didn’t do the colorimetry for the laser system, it’s only two chip, compared to the three of the Iconix.

The other cameras in our theatres are all ancient (but very nice when they’re working) Panas H522s.

Recording to DV and SVHS currently but the whole system needs rethinking and engineering now. Being UK health sector – no money of course.

I’m involved in a similar field in the uk. We’re all SD at the moment but would like to ug eventually. What cameras are you looking at.

From this side of the pond it looks like the Iconix is the main/only serious contender.

What David says is absolutely true, both AVI and QT are just the wrappers for whatever ‘video’ is inside.

I’m in a very similar situation to, you editing both PC and Mac and the closest I’ve come to an editing app that will open the greatest variety of files is Sony’s Vegas (PC with QTpro loaded)

Whichever way you jump you’ll need to keep the app and codecs up to date as the list is ever growing!

Saturated red is very low luminance level and with composite, Y/C and YUV it’s only the luminance channel that has greater bandwidth.

What you’re seeing is the lower bandwidth quality of the chroma channels. Increase the red luma somehow – ie desaturate.

Even going uncompressed (YUV) saturated reds will have less ‘sharpness’ than white, greys or blacks.

Yes that’s very true. It was the fact that FCP was tied up, that slowed me down while compressor was working.

So I export a ref audio-only QT for each clip, then use compressor stand alone to batch process this lot to AC3 right?

Yes Jeremey I’ve never used batch export I’d forgotten that one.

I think faffing about with muultiple compressor batch lists isn’t going to be much of an answer considering the hundreds of exports required.
