Your machine uses the Expansion Slot Utility application, so you would actually not want to place the KONA LHe in slot 2, but slot 3. Sorry for the point of confusion on which version Mac Pro you were using (the later Mac Pros use slot 2, earlier Mac Pros, slot 3.) As noted, earlier Mac Pros used the Expansion Slot Utility to configure the speed of the slots, therefore your machine appears to be a pre-2008 model. The KONA cards optimum placement is slot 3 on pre-2008 Mac Pros and the Expansion Slot Utility application should be set to the second choice from the list which results in, slot 1 = x16, slot 2 = x1, slot 3 = x4 and slot 4 = x4.

You may want to make sure that your card is placed in the correct slot within the Mac Pro. The symptoms you describe sound like the card is not running at the appropriate PCIe speed, and thus why SD, which is lower bandwidth, seems to perform fine when compared to HD material which requires higher bandwidth.

For example, the KONA LHe, which you have, is only recommended for use in Slot 2 of the more recent Mac Pros, so if it is not placed in this slot, it may be underperforming as you have described.

Gary is correct; the component level values are set incorrectly for HD. \”Betacam\” is only an acceptable choice for SD material. This is why you were able to capture SD but not HD video input to the Ki Pro. Reset these values to an appropriate setting for HD and you should be able to work with the HD source.

There is a new release for the KONA LHi. The new release version is 8.0.1. This release addresses a KONA LHi issue where some users experienced intermittent glitches in video and audio. Features and improvements are otherwise exactly the same as the version 8.0 driver.

You can resolve the error prompt in Automator, “The action ‘KONA DPX To QT Translator’ could not be loaded because it is not Universal” by first going to the Applications folder on your computer, selecting the Automator application and control clicking on the icon and selecting Get Info from the contextual menu that appears. Once in the app info window, tick the checkbox for “Open in 32-bit mode” and you will be able to use the KONA DPX To QT Translator Action in Automator as expected.

The improvements to RT performance mentioned in the release notes for the 8.0 software were optimizations to improve the interaction between the AJA drivers and the Dynamic RT engine. This doesn’t represent any new RT effects handling, or more layers of video, etc.

Sorry if the way it was stated in the release notes wasn’t clear enough. Hopefully this additional information is helpful.

The reel number associated to the clip is based off of the selection made in the Ki Pro Media menu parameter, Reel Name 17.0. Typically, this matches the volume name since you are likely to have formatted the media with a particular reel value and then begun your recordings. Note that you can change the Reel Name to something other than the volume name and that subsequent clips would have this value instead of the volume’s name. It’s possible that this is what occurred in this particular case.
