    https://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/332589.html

I recently used this to get some improved performance in AE. Not sure how it effected other apps, but further down in this doc are adobe’s recomendations for RAM and virtual memory settings.

September 18, 2006 at 12:50 pm in reply to: How to make “natural bounce”

Well, do what I do – go bounce a ball and see what happens…

when a ball hits the ground, it bounces in high archs with ground hits further apart, and eventually is barely moving off the ground with frequent ground hits.

So on the hits to the ground you want to use linear interpolation for both time (temporal) and space (spatial). The linear keyframes make an abrupt change in speed, direction and position as you would see in real life.

If you’re ball is bouncing straight up then on the arcs you want to use Easy Ease keyframes for the temporal and spatial. This makes the ball sort of hang in the air a moment before coming down.

If it is bouncing from left to right (or R to L) then on the arcs you probably want to use auto bezierfor the temporal and spatial. This will create natural arcs.

There’s always a good chance that if you’d like to do it, someone else has already requested this info. If you search first you’ll savge yourself a lot of time.

It just so happens we have a tutorial on it here:

  • Thanks. Working with people I often deiscover that they (and sometimes I) missed a really good tool along the way in learning AE.

I was concerned that people would not like these, so thanks for the affirmation.

September 18, 2006 at 12:33 pm in reply to: ParticleIllusion to After Effects: no shadows

Need more info to answer this. What you are doing is unclear to me becasue:

If the particles are light, then they wouldn’t cast their own shadow. THey would cause other objects to cast shadows – right?

so waht exactly are you trying to do?

    Thanks.

I get that when RAM is low. Try purging thew memory and previewing smaller sections at a time by shotening your work area. HD footage takes upa lot of RAM.

Edit > Purge > All (Gets rid of undo’s and image cache).

September 18, 2006 at 12:28 pm in reply to: Nucleo Pro verdict?

Yes – but you need at least dual processors (or 1 dual core chip) to see any fast render/preview benefits. Also, 2 GB or RAM is really the minimum.

The more processors you have the more benfit you’ll see. 2 processors might use most of the 2 chips for AE renders and such, but a quad will likely use a lot less then the full processing power. Also, I demod Nucleo Pro on an Octaflex (4 dual core processor machine) and the benefits were huge becasue the octaflex was only getting 40% processor power out of AE on some projects. Nucleo gave it 100% power which you could really see working the magic.

That said, some of the other workflow aspects of Pro, like spec preview and render and commit to disc and of course BG render are VERY helpful.

There are some rough spots like Nucleo magnifies a problem AE has with rasterizing Illustrator art – which translates out to a slowdown in some cases, and there are a few things I would like to see changed interface wise – but it is a good product that is worth the money.

I’m prepping a video podcast on it now – As I said, I demo’d Nucleo Pro at IBC, and wouldn’t have done that if I didn’t believe in the product. I was asked to do it because GridIron knew how much I liked it.

Same one as Andrew – Camtasia Studio. Pretty good – but only for PC.

However, I edit in After Effects, not camtasia.

    Hey there-

I use Sqeeze with the CD setting for Quicktime. I change the size to 800×600, but that’s it.

    No other changes.

Sometimes if I think the file is too big, I will limit the file size, but that only makes it look worse not better.
