I’ve watched the DVD several times, but I am coming from the perspective of someone who already has years of experience. So it’s hard for me to say. but from what I hear from other people, even knowing very little, you will still be able to follow and move along nicely.
You may want to post in the AE forum and see what other people think, or you can add a post to this string and see if anyone can tell you what you need to know:
My guess is that you will learn a lot – but be warned, you need to have some basic AE skills and a copy of AE7 to open all the projects.

Ideally there are certain shades of blue or green that work best because they are far outside the range of normal color use (so it’s rare to wear a shirt that exact blue or green, and skin tones are not close to those colors). But in truth ANY color not being used by your actor *might* be OK as a BG color.
The most crucial part of green-screening is lighting. You’re BG color must be lit well enough to stay as close to one shade of green as possible, in order that your keyer (the software removing the green) doesn’t get confused.
To really do keying you;ll need a compositing program like After Effects.
If you want to learn more about compositing and Effects, I’d suggest you check out Andrew Kramer’s Creative Cow Master Series DVD: Serious FX and compositing – found at https://www.creativecowtraining.net.

An AE project is purely data referencing other files or effects and parameters within the program, as well as the data that tells AE what to do with that stuff. So for example, The number of keyframes will have a big impact on file size. So will any parameter not set to it’s default value, as well as masks, markers, expressions, or anything else that adds to what is by default a simple text file. Even the number of files being referenced, or how many solids and their names adds to the file size. And that’s just what I can think of off the top of my head.
So the more you do in there, the larger your AE file will be. But on the up side, for storage and email purposes, since it is a text file, zipping up the file will bring the file size down dramatically. Also, reducing the project file to remove anything notr being used will also bring the file size down.

Pierre – I didn’t realize you were active on this list – I just saw your name. It was great seeing you too!
Looking forward to the next conference (well, maybe not exactly looking forward to the long days, but at least it’s nice to hang out with you guys).

September 21, 2006 at 2:50 pm in reply to: how to create pixel lines (*no* antialiasing..)?2 things I can think of:
1. try adding the effect called Effect > Stylize > Mosaic and set the tiling to half or 1/4 the comps resoultion
2. Just turn off the best quality switch ( the “/” in the switches pannel in the timeline) for that layer. It will change it to Draft Quality whicvh will make it more aliased.
However, in your render settings you need to make sure to change it from Best quality to Current, or it will just alias it on rendering.
I think Option 1 is better.
