yes – this is a RAM issue. All of the advice given is good. Also working at 50% and half res, will help while working, but may be a problem while rendering. Make sure to set up AE to purge your RAM cache when you render or you will run into problems there too.
You set that up in the secret menu – here’s a link to a tutorial that explains how to do that:
At least, I think that’s the tutorial. I’m pretty jet lagged at the moment, but I think that’s it.

Best bet – after everything is imported, choose File > Consolidate all footage, which looks for matching files and gets rid of extra references – then do collect files.

I would start with the simple shapes library that comes with pIllusion. That has some good stuff for Retro looks – especially the dots.
Also check out the 06_02 library with a few “Don’t Erase” emitters – *might* be helpful.

Yeah – definately lens flares, mostly placed off the side of the screen so they are just hinted at, although Knoll Light factory can give you seperate flare elements as well.

Definately one of the most requested effects, but still not possible in AE on a practical level.
