just briefly – but yeah I saw it. That (very small) part I saw reminded me of Maya’s fluid effects. Really nice. But it’s still in Alpha so it could grow a lot before you ever see it.

You might be able to get this done with wondertouch particleIllusion. There is a library of water splash emitters that actually look pretty good. The program costs less than a stock footage CD, so I think it’s worth checking out, and trying the 30-day trial.
I’m here at NAB, and one of the projects I;m demoing for wondertouch is a water splash. It look spretty good, but it may not be appropriate for your project.

1) Time dispolacement. use a greyscale map (maybe a pixelated fractal noise image) to displace time.

Another option – have you thought about actually compressing the video with bad settings and then actualy cutting/cross fading from the good version to the compressed version. Might work…

you can also do this without leaving AE, by duplicating the layer and on the new layer, choosing Layer > Time > Freeze frame
Then use the pen tools to make a mask around the person,which removes the Background. Then… go to town baby!

I’m sure you realize this by now, but the render engine is meant to be installed on computers without a full version of AE.
