Definately one of the most requested effects, but still not possible in AE on a practical level.
Take a look at this tutorial for info on doing it with Maya and C4D:

DOn;t waste your time creating outlines in AI just to bring them into AE. You can do the same thing to text layers in AE:
I’m not in front of a computer with AE at the moment, but to give you a rough idea (forgive the lack of exact phrasing), select the text layer and choose: Layer > Convert Text To Outlines.
I did a recent podcast that covered this – it was called the scribble effect (part 1)

I’ll keep it in mind – though, alas, I’m leaving tomorrow. So perhaps next time?
I’m here for the beaches, water sports and the quiet. Sadly the last 2 days have left me a little wet, and not from swimming. Still, being down here is pretty relaxing compared to NYC (Which I love, but from which I need a break occasionally).

from my conversation with WT, this is not the kind of thing that’s too complicated, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much. In the meantime AE CS3 is not even available, so doubly I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

One wy is to raise the frame rate, as you said, and then render out. Bring the image sequence into your editor and then interpret the footage at a lower frame rate. SO if you were set to 240 FPS in pIllusion, and then 30 in your video editor, then it would play back at 1/8th the speed.
For emitters that use image sequences, this gets hairy because it changes the speed at which those sequences play back. But in terms of emitters that don;t use a progressive sequences of images (like a video of an asteroid spinning, or a person walking) this should work fine – Sometimes. It’s not always perfect…

Not in fron of AE, but if you select the mask in the comp window, and then select a mask point, you can choose Layer > Mask > Set first Vertex.
I think you can do the same by right clicking on the mask point as well and choosing that option from the pop-up.
