I have some stuff for the puppet tool soon. But I haven’t recorded anything yet – just stuff I presented either at AENY or at Promax, but I found a few cool unexpected things that can be done.

For example, you can use the puppet to make a character deform along a motion path. Set a few puppet points from top to bottom of the actor, and then animate the top one to move all over the place. Then copy those keyframes and paste them one frame later for the puppet point below it. Do that for all of them, one frame later than the previous one. It will make your actor stretch and fly all over the place like a balloon shooting out its air.

You can also do some very subtle facial animation for a character as well. Make the eyebrows and mouth seperate from the face, and animate the angles of things. This is harder to describe…

Wow, that post is old. Good work on Ricks part, no question.

These days though, Trapcode particlular or wondertouch particleIllusion are a good place to start. Both have presets for similar effects, although I think you’ll have more luck with particleIllusion for something this simple. Other people would say use particular

The effect itself is quite simple, but the actor is either filmed on a green screen or at a seperate time on the same BG. Simple fade out along with the particles does the job.

    make sense?

    Best,

    Aharon

In the past, I’ve made the comp slightly bogger than I will finally need it to be, and then nest that comp in a comp the right size.

Then I wiggle the comp as needed.

Depending on the shot, you may not need to wiggle in 3D and this is an easy way to do it.

May not be what you need though. If you want the motion to make other objects shift in the perspective (which is actually not that natural, but a popular effect these days), then this won;t work. Buit for a realistic camera shake, it really works.

I used the technique in this old project a lot:

Particularly in the cave shot, the bloodstream, the tube (with litle hairs) and the viruses (purple shot).

  • I spoke with OWC, and they assured me that the certified and non certified RAM were identical.

I don’t actually have a Mac (I considered it briefly), so I can’t say from experience that they are the same, but unlike other non-certified RAM, which can be designed differently, these were actually designed to Apple’s specs. They gurantee that it will work, and have a lifetime replacement policy for it if it doesn’t.

But for a few extra bucks, you can not worry about it, and get some sleep. But I just wanted to mention that.

July 6, 2007 at 1:26 am in reply to: Call it AECS3 or AE8?

Steve Kilisky corrected me when I called it AE 8 at an AENY meeting. It’s officially called AE CS3 (though, as it loads up, it bares the release number “8”).

I, for one, will continue to call it by its popular nickname, Jim-Bob.

  • This was a great tutorial. Thanks so much for sharing this information. A big issue for me is when clients hand me foreground elements for compositing that aren’t lit the same way as the background. Even when it is already keyed (or just has an alpha channel) it’s still a challenge to make things fit together right.

The lighting tips will go a long way to helping me.

knoll is awesome because you can create so many varied looks with what’s in there. I’ve never tried the sapphire suite.

June 29, 2007 at 4:08 am in reply to: making stars in a still twinkle?

    try this.

Make a solid black layer and place it behind the stars.

Create a solid layer and leave it at the top of the stack order.

Give the top layer the fractal noise effect. Effect >Noise and grain > Fractal Noise.

Set the stars layer to use the fractal noise layer as a luma matte

Animate the fractal noise’s evolution property. (you’ll have to play around a bit.

The fractal noise is being used as a luma matte to reveal and hide different stars. As the evolution is animated some stars are hidden, others revealed.

Check out my 3 tutorials on fractal noise (click on my head). They will get you started with this super powerful effect.

I’m not sure. Give it a shot in CS3 and see what happens. The 10 image limit may not be an issue any longer.

Yes, you can copy a path into alyer’s position from a mask by following this tutorial:

    Watch Me!

Regardless of how you make your pathe (whether through a mask or just animating by hand) you can have the object orient along the path by choosing Layer > Transform > Auto Orient, and then choosing Orient along path. You may need to use the rotation property to change the initial orientation (It may orient sideways for example, so you’d set rotation to 90 degrees).
