Animated film strip
I have these rotating “film wheels” and I want a “filmstrip” to be animated going around the wheels. So it’s basically a white line going around some rotating wheels. The problem is having a long line (the film strip) being bent around multiple wheels and still extending. How would I go about doing this?

if it;s just a whte line (i.e., you can;t see the actual filmstrip – just the side) why not make a stroke. Creat a solid, and then make a path using the pen tools that follows the shape of your film strip.
Then apply the stroke effect (Setting it to stroke your mask, and to composite the stroke on transparent).
Effect > Generate > Stroke…

Thanks, but how do I animate the stroke?

That depends on what you’re trying to do. My understanding was that you just wanted a line.
If you want segements (a broken line) that can cycle over and over, you migth want to look into the vegas effect, BTW.
But to animate a stroke, play with and animate the “start” and “end” properties.

Is it possible to make an object and animate on the path, but how do I get the object to stay oriented onto the path?

Yes, you can copy a path into alyer’s position from a mask by following this tutorial:
Regardless of how you make your pathe (whether through a mask or just animating by hand) you can have the object orient along the path by choosing Layer > Transform > Auto Orient, and then choosing Orient along path. You may need to use the rotation property to change the initial orientation (It may orient sideways for example, so you’d set rotation to 90 degrees).
