Thanks Joe – it looks like I may have some kind of conflict with my firewire card and firewire ports. Or possibly the firewall. We’re working on it. Fortunately, it turns out that the camera functions well over USB 2.

Hey don’t look at me – that’s all jerzy droza.
But if you can use the cloning tools in photoshop, you can almost certainly get better or more consistent results directly in AE.

have you tried shutting down and restarting your computer? Sometimes my computer thinks there are files open even after I close them.
And Somethimes they are actually still open – but hidden – if your on windows, try going into the task manager and see if photoshop.exe is listed in the processes tab. If so, you can try and close it down there.
Or just shut down your computer and restart.

Something else to note is that some video compression apps (Such as squueeze) allow you to add video keyframes in the timeline when doing MPEG-2 Compression. That means that if you’re finding a spot in the video where it looks particularly bad, you can add a keyframe in to “refresh” the image that the following frames are based on (in video compression, with certain codecs, most of the frames are not real video – they are only the pixels that have changed).
Anyway, that may help too.

This is a new one to me, but maybe… maybe… try taking your final comp and then nest it in a new comp.
Maybe AE won’t see the masks anymore? When you precompose and nest, AE looks at it as footage instead of a comp, more or less.
It shoudldn’t help… but then, it shouldn’t be happening at all. So who knows?
