Nice! Really cool. I agree with Alan’s advice though. in water, things further away are more distorted and up clode they are much less distordet. Even if that weren’t the case, you’d still want to see the titles anyway.

    Good work!

Are your images scaled down? We’ve had this problem at studios and ended up using an actual camera on a track over a picture.

The problem is that if your image is scaled down, then as it moves from left to right or scales up…etc. you are revealing hidden pixels – rmember, a 50% scale image has to put half it’s pixels somewhere – in high contrast areas, this reveling and hiding creates a shimmer.

Some solutions I’ve heard say use frame blending or blur the image a little. Neither of those has really ever worked for me though.

If your image is scaled down, but you aren’t scaling up or down, you might consider actually scaling the image down in photoshop or the like. That would get rid of the hidden pixels.

I’d create a path (with the pen tool) on a solid layer that matches the shape you want the arows to follow.

Then I’d copy the Mask Shape, and paste it into my Arrow’s position property.

Then I’d turn on Layer > Transform > orientation > Orient to path (so that it rotates to follow the path as it moves)

Then I’d use the rotation property to correct the rotation of the arrow incase it wasn’t facing forwards.

You can always duplcate your arrow layers and move them over in time to have many follow the same path.

    Does that make sense?

set the text’s X orientation to 90 or -90. It’s under the rotation property.

That’s the tutorial he pointed to in his original post. He’s trying to find an alternate solution to avoid purchasing the plug-in.

However, Mar is right. If you find yourself doing crowd shots a lot, it might be worth investing the money. Personally, I don’t buy plugins unless they are extremely useful, and used more than occasionally (or unless a client who really likes a particular effect – no pun – says he wants exactly that look).

Particular helps in this case, but I don;t think it’t necessary.

You can do this using the 3D assistants light that come with AE Pro (seperate installer). Use the assistant called cunic distribution to duplicate and distribute your people within a cubic space – though you can choose to distribut only on 2 or even 1 axis.

Following some of what the tutorial suggested, create a loop of footage. What you’ll need to do is set up a few layers that will be the source for your duplication, and offset them in time so that they don’t all start at the same time. 4-5 slightly time-offset layers should be good.

Figure out how many pixels you want the duplicates to span – in other words how far into X and Z space you want them to go. Set Y to 0, so they aren’t off the ground.

Then just use the asistant to make duplicates.

    2 things –

    1) I’ve never tried this. Sorry if it doesn’t work exactly as I think it will.
    2) It will probably make AE run slower as it’s calcualting a lot of 3D layers.

Finally, let me say, you don’t even need the 3D assistants if you don;t mind taking the time to set it up by hand, which you can do. Maka abunch of layers and then hand-distribute them in 3D space. Not fun, but doable.

emitter library called “Color from layer” or “Get Color from Layer.”
