Particular helps in this case, but I don;t think it’t necessary.

You can do this using the 3D assistants light that come with AE Pro (seperate installer). Use the assistant called cunic distribution to duplicate and distribute your people within a cubic space – though you can choose to distribut only on 2 or even 1 axis.

Following some of what the tutorial suggested, create a loop of footage. What you’ll need to do is set up a few layers that will be the source for your duplication, and offset them in time so that they don’t all start at the same time. 4-5 slightly time-offset layers should be good.

Figure out how many pixels you want the duplicates to span – in other words how far into X and Z space you want them to go. Set Y to 0, so they aren’t off the ground.

Then just use the asistant to make duplicates.

    2 things –

    1) I’ve never tried this. Sorry if it doesn’t work exactly as I think it will.
    2) It will probably make AE run slower as it’s calcualting a lot of 3D layers.

Finally, let me say, you don’t even need the 3D assistants if you don;t mind taking the time to set it up by hand, which you can do. Maka abunch of layers and then hand-distribute them in 3D space. Not fun, but doable.

There is an amazing tutorial on the Trapcode side made by the guys from Belief.
Go and watch it, even if you don’t have particular, it’s jaw dropping.

This is the direct link to the tutorial

    https://belief.com/stage/index.php?section=process&project=02.Zoom%20Network%20Launch&id=01.How%20To%20Make%20a%20Crowd.800×600.mov&width=800&height=600

After that, you’ll want to buy the plugin if you need to make crowds …

That’s the tutorial he pointed to in his original post. He’s trying to find an alternate solution to avoid purchasing the plug-in.

However, Mar is right. If you find yourself doing crowd shots a lot, it might be worth investing the money. Personally, I don’t buy plugins unless they are extremely useful, and used more than occasionally (or unless a client who really likes a particular effect – no pun – says he wants exactly that look).
