instead of displacement map effect, try using the effect called caustics. You can soften the edges in that, and it does some really nice stuff, but it’s a lot more complex than the displacement map effect.
Jim Tierney wrote a tutorial on it here:

Stretching your project to fit in a widescreen comp will only make it looked stretched when you play it on a TV.
I might be misunderstanding: Is this the kind of thing where you can draw a mask that cuts off some of the top and bottom to make it look widescreen? That may be your best option here, and itr’s not a good one.
If not, and they want the project cto actually be formated for widescreen (and by that I mean that your safety areas are larger on the sides – i.e., you have more area to work with on the sides, becasue you are working with a different Pixel Aspect Ratio) then you have to know this when you start. Generally, you can’t just change a project from 4:3 to anamorphic (16:9). Think about it:
You’ve done all of your work for a 4:3 setting. Since, by making it widescreen you’ve widened the area of animation, things that fly off the screen to the right or left may still be seen on the screen, when you inteded them to be gone. Furthermore, backgrounds that were formatted for 4:3 are the wrong size, and unless you want to scale them up and lose quality (Illustrator artwork aside), you need to use a BG formateed for this kind of thing. Your safety areas have changed, which means there’s more room for text and images on the screen.
I hate to say it, but there’s no good solution for this, other than retooling everything that needs it. If your client failed to mention that they wanted it widescreen, you *might* be able to diplomatically convince them that its their fault for not telling you this, so that you can get paid for the time it will take to do this.
Good luck.

December 23, 2005 at 3:08 pm in reply to: Podcast tutorial: Working more effectively in After Effects by Aharon Rabinowitzglad you like them. I recently realized just how much I’ve learned over the years by working with companies that weren’t quite organized. While it was a struggle to get it together on thos projects, I’d have nothing useful to share if it hadn’t been (Though I would have gotten a lot more sleep).
Hopefully it will help people in the stuff they do regularly.

Alan didn;t do the video – it was submitted by a pIllusion user.
A 3D wall like that has to be done in a 3D program using camera matching software so that the wall follows the footage, and rotates properly.
Again, the wall is a 3D object added into the scene, and it breaks into pieces, which are also 3D.
This effect cannot really be done in a 2D environment, at least not in any way realistically.
Even if you were dealing with a still camera, so you didn’t have to worry about camera matching, The problem with AE’s shatter is that the pieces have to go some where when they break, and AE doesn’t give you that option – the pieces have to go somewhere when they break, and it ends up falling outside the comp – no floor to land on.

December 15, 2005 at 4:16 am in reply to: Adding Camera Effects In After Effects – Shake, Pan?If you prefer to work with keyframes instead of an expression, try the wiggler on the position and scale property:
Window > The wiggler
You must set a keyframe on the first palce you want it to shake, on the last place you want it to shake, select both keyframes in the timeline, and then the wiggler becomes active. You can’t do anything on the wiggler until then.
The wiggle Expression does the same thing, but it’s not keyframed:
wiggle(A,B)
A = Frequency (Rate of wiggle per second) and
B = Magnitude (Number of units – pixels, for example- to deviate from it’s current value.
So the position property with this expression:
wiggle(3,20)
means wiggle the value 3 times a second, up to to 20 pixels off the current position.

you won;t see anything until you actually hit “Play.” ANd if you start later in the timeline, it will only draw from that frame forward in time.

It would be very difficult to do that in AE. Something like that requires a 3D camera matching software like SynthEyes or Bojou.

I can’t think of anything. This method assumes you are doing all of your compositing in pIllusion, so it doesn’t take that into account.
Where are you bringing the footage when you’re done with it in pIllusion? Depending on what software you’re bringing it into for editing or compositing, there may be an easier way to do this, that takes alpha channles into account.
