Believe me, this is one of the most amazing AE upgrades ever. Probably only AE5 and AE6 were bigger than this.
When you try Puppet you’ll be an instant believer. It’s a really, really groundbreaking approach for animating images. It gives you IK-like animation, without having to create bone structures. It’s very easy to use, yet it provides very deep controls for everything.
Shape layers are not a “feature”: they’re a massive arsenal of motion graphics features. It’s not just the AI vector engine, but rather the AI concepts adapted to motion graphics and animation needs. These are sort of whole comps with a very sophisticated hierarchy. What text animators were for text, these will be for shapes. There’s even a mini-replicator inside!
“Hopefully this new update will straighten some of it out.”
Straighten what? AE 7 is pre-Intel. It’s not their fault. You should have known it would run in emulation.
AE CS3 will absolutely fly on your Mac Pro. But you will need a lot of RAM if you want to really take advantage of simultaneous processing. For some projects, you can expect a linear improvement in rendering speed. Enough said. There are gigantic enhancement across the board. Just to name one: enormously improved, adaptive MB. Instead of using just 16 MB samples, with that very noticeable stepping, AE will now dynamically pick the amount of samples needed to create super smooth MB. How about that?
The ability to bring a Vanishing Point scene from PS as an AE comp, with the perspsective planes converted to AE 3D layers and assemled as a “model” is another groundbreaking feature. Expect to see a lot of this, everywhere.

It may be better than IK for AE.
It can be used for things you normally would use IK for, but it doesn’t require bone structures or anything like that. You just place a few pins, and then you can use motion sketch-like RT recording. It’s really rocket science, patent generating stuff. It’s a new algorithm that produces non-distorting image warping. It has to be seen to be believed. It creates a vector mesh for bitmaps, but you don’t even have to be aware of it. Since there are no bones, it has additional tools to define areas with stronger stiffness, and also it lets you assign overlap priorities for different areas (so one hand is front of the main body and the other is behind, for example, when they overlap). Really, really amazing stuff.

AE 7.0 added blur as a text animator property. Look closer, it’s there 🙂

The write-on effects lets you animate width over the stroke lentgh. Its’ one of the options. When you turn it on, it means that the stroke from that point on has this new width. Otherwise, it means the whole stroke changes width.
You can copy a mask or AI path and paste as position keyframes for Write-on.Adolfo Rozenfeld

CR2 is a Canon format. AE will not render to that format. Why would you want to render to a camera’s porprietary format anyway?
I don’t think you could render to DNG either, and there isn’t really a reason to do so: DNG makes sense because Camera Raw/LightRoom can keep some parameters editable from the raw file. By definition, whatever you do in AE won’t operate in those parameters. You can get much higher quality anyway if you export to OpenEXR or 32 bit PSDs, which are HDR formats.Adolfo Rozenfeld

[sam.mltn] “The mac color picker that comes up when you select system color picker in preferences has 14 or 15 swatches at the bottom that you can use”
Nope. That’s only the quick swatches in the main pane(just sliding the drawer in that very pane will show you tens more though). Then there’s a specific pane in the picker that allows you to store colors and color lists by name. As many as you want.

Sorry!
Wrong forum. There isn’t a Numbers effect in Motion.
I didn’t realize I changed forums! Sorry.Adolfo Rozenfeld

Apply the Numbers effect (Effects > Text > Numers) and keyframe the start and end values.

One of the really cool things of the Mac OS color picker is that it can be extended with plug-ins. For example, there’s one called Painte’s Picker that provides Color Theory/Kuler like functionality inside the picker. Unfortunately, the Mac picker is not HDR aware. Otherwise, it would be perfect…

It’s a very common request, a swatches palnel with the ability to store and retrieve color collections.
If you’re on Mac, you can swtich to the system color picker (general prefs), which happens to have this ability. You can also use the OS picker in Photoshop and other applications, so it would give you the ability so share collections across applications. If you use Windows, then i don’t know, maybe there is some kind of 3rd party extension to the OS picker?Adolfo Rozenfeld
