wishing for color palette in AE 7.0
Posted by Joel Kai on February 24, 2007 at 3:20 pmDoes anybody know why there is no color palette in AE? I’m aware of Swatch Buckler, but I don’t believe there’s a version for AE 7.0. It doesn’t make sense to me… this is a very basic thing. Photoshop does it. Illustrator does it. But not After Effects. Seems strange. What are suggestions for addressing this issue in AE 7.0?

February 25, 2007 at 8:42 amIt’s a very common request, a swatches palnel with the ability to store and retrieve color collections.
If you’re on Mac, you can swtich to the system color picker (general prefs), which happens to have this ability. You can also use the OS picker in Photoshop and other applications, so it would give you the ability so share collections across applications. If you use Windows, then i don’t know, maybe there is some kind of 3rd party extension to the OS picker?Adolfo Rozenfeld

Nope, technically impossible as the system color picker is rooted in the GDI system and cannot be replaced. Either you use it or you don’t. There’s no inbetweens.

February 25, 2007 at 7:48 pmOne of the really cool things of the Mac OS color picker is that it can be extended with plug-ins. For example, there’s one called Painte’s Picker that provides Color Theory/Kuler like functionality inside the picker. Unfortunately, the Mac picker is not HDR aware. Otherwise, it would be perfect…

February 26, 2007 at 5:36 pmThe mac color picker that comes up when you select system color picker in preferences has 14 or 15 swatches at the bottom that you can use. When I’m working with a special color palette I make a sample in Photoshop and import it into my AE project.

Nope. That’s only the quick swatches in the main pane(just sliding the drawer in that very pane will show you tens more though). Then there’s a specific pane in the picker that allows you to store colors and color lists by name. As many as you want.
