The Puppet tool is nothing short of miraculous, really 🙂
You place a few pins on an image and it creates a vector mesh to distort the source image in a way… that doesn’t look distorted at all. It just feels very organic and natural. It basically converts anything (a shape, a text element, a picture, etc) into a living thing! It has motion sketch functionality built-in, so that you can record motion in RT with your mouse or pen.
You can even drive the pins with audio amplitude!

Expressions can’t access mask nodes directly. Scripting can, as the link you mention shows.

You can’t apply wiggle() to a mask path, because the nodes’ locations aren’t exposed to expressions.

In CS3 you’ll be able to apply the Wiggle Paths operator (sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?) to a bezier shape path, which is identical and compatible with mask paths.

CS3 provides similar multiproc optimization as Nucleo (standard), but Nucleo Pro still offers things like speculative/background rendering, etc.

Yes, you can control the pins with expressions. From the AE site: “Use Motion Sketch to record the position and speed of your puppet movements”. You end up with position data, and you can do whatever you want with that.

” Any potential tutorials on simmer?”

I’m sure Dan will blow our minds in this front.
I’m also sure that in the coming months we’ll see amazing things done with Puppet.

CS3 will allow you to bring layer styles from PSD files and make them editable. In other words, you not only get layer styles preserved, but you can also edit and animate the parameters.

If you get the Windows version you will only be able to use it on Windows. You *could* use it on an Intel Mac by using Boot Camp to boot Windows. But, honestly, if you’re getting a Mac is to use the Mac OS, not to boot Windows for the main tasks, right?

I am sure Adobe offers crossgrades, if you decide to switch.

No, it means that it will work in both PPC and Intel based Macs. That’s the case for After Effects and all of the design applications. Premiere Pro, Encore and Soundbooth are Intel only on the Mac.

March 29, 2007 at 4:31 am in reply to: looks more like a dot release?

“I am looking forward to the new release, but I am starting to wonder of Adobe is starting to pigeon-hole after effects firmly into the mograph world, leaving compositing aside”

The opposite could have been said when AE 7 came out.
There are however a number of features that are extremely important for compositing people (and everyone else too).
AE CS3 has dramatically improved, adaptive motion blur. Goodbye to obvious visible steps. It now figures out how many steps are needed depending on each section of the animation. And it looks gorgeous!
Also, color management may end up being the most important feature in CS3. Trust me on this one. It’s much more important than just having Photoshop files appear exactly as in Photoshop… it’s more like getting an HD monitor for free. How good is that?
Does this help in injecting more enthusiasm?
