The Public Preview should be available quite before the 18th.
I’ll post the details soon.
Stay tuned…

I read Zaxwerks is about to release a plug-in for 3D warping in AE. Looks impressive.

• [wuzelwazel] “This is actually one of the features I’m more excited about =) I don’t claim to be any more than a babe in the woods when it comes to video color management, but I’m eager to sink my teeth in and learn more.”

We are all babes in the woods when it comes to CM in video 🙂
Fortunately, you’ll see it’s much less esoteric than one fears. It’s something you can understand in 10 minutes, given the right explanation (I mean the basics, I wouldn’t claim to have digested more than that).
AFAIK, no application provides such a comprehensive CM approach for all stages of the image processing pipeline (input/project/display/output) as AE CS3 will…

I recommend taking a very serious look at a display calibrating device. Even something inexpensive, like the $70 Spyder2Express.
Still not sure what I’m gonna do. Because, as the thread point out, that you need at least 2GB RAM per core, I’ll probably stick with the quad for now and be happy.
That may be ideal, but 1 Gigabyte per core should work well too.
For dual core laptop users, even a bit less than that will be OK too.

• If you can wait until NAB next week, when the AE CS3 public preview will be launched, then you’ll find that Color Management in CS3 is much easier, streamlined and powerful. It may not be the kind of thing that looks spectacular in feature bullets, but I believe many people will find it’s one of the most amazing additions in this version.
In this case, you will be able to pick a REC709 working space (generic name I’m giving, I’m not sure if I’m allowed to name specifics) and CS3 will most likely assign automatically a REC709 input profile for your footage (if it doesn’t, you’ll be able to do that yourself). You will also be able to simulate how it would look on an HDTV monitor. How cool is that?

FWIW, most gamma/luminance shifts when going from AE to FCP are not related to subtle RGB>YUV space conversion issues, but rather to a the idiosyncratic way FCP has for handing gamma in RGB files. If you’re rendering from AE for FCP, you may find that a gamma correction of 0.824 will compensate for the gamma increase FCP will apply to the clip (credit to Chris Meyer for the actual gamma correction number).

Also, CS3 brings the long-awaited rounded rectangle tool. You can use it to create masks (as you need now) and shapes, with parametric control of roundness.

April 6, 2007 at 5:54 am in reply to: AE6- unwanted flicker on scanned images

There are many ways to get rid of flickering.
In AE you can apply the Reduce Interlace Flicker effect (sounds good, doesn’t it?).
It’s in Effects > Blur.
Experiment with values in the 0.7-1.0 range, so you preserve as much resolution as possible.

You can also heal flickering elements in PS, before taking the graphics to AE.
Whatever you do, don’t apply the deinterlace effect in PS. That’s like curing a headache with a shot in the head, if you know I mean.
In the Actions panel in PS, there’s a folder with actions for video. One of those actions performs adaptive flicker removal. Translation: it tries to detect areas that are prone to flickering and heals those specifically.
If you want something simpler, apply the Motion Blur effect in PS, with direction: 90 degrees and intensity: 1. It’ll certainly remove the flicker and you won’t loose that much resolution.

April 5, 2007 at 3:11 am in reply to: 8core vs Quad for AE

To say CS3 takes better advantage of multiple processors is a complete understatement. For most projects (the exception being very time dependent effects) you can expect performance will almost be multiplied by the number of cores/processors. A quad core machine will perform RAM previews and Render Queue renders about 400 per cent faster than a single core one. I’m not exaggerating (your mileage may vary, depending on the nature of the project, of course).
Bear in mind, however, that each one of these background processes needs a respectable amount of RAM. A good starting point is to think half a gigabyte per core, plus what you would normally use for the main app and the OS. So, in the case of this new 8 core beast, you will want around 8 GB of RAM to make it sing.
I have not tested an eight-core machine myself, of course, so i have no idea if at some point overall system bandwidth may limit the linear improvement in processing speeds.
Hope this helps.

April 2, 2007 at 4:00 pm in reply to: Ram Usage

AE CS3 will use up to 3.5GB for each process on Mac OS X, and 4GB per process on Win64. If you have a lot of RAM, it will take advatange of it all…
