1. No, you can’t. You can fake some simple aspects of it, by applying the Basic 3D filter to a text object. Or you can have it a bit deeper with Zaxwerks’ Stackwerks plug-in. But you will eventually want things to interact and intersect in 3D space, and that you can’t have now.

I’ve heard and read very good things about Fusion. But I don’t think there’s much of AE, or a motion graphics app , in it.
In the last 10 years I’ve seen a whole spectrum of “AE killers” , which are now dead or in intensive care, yet AE is more alive than ever and has a market penetration that is probably higher than the combination of all others.
Tomorrow it’ll be the Phenomenon thing. Now it’s Fusion or Nuke. Before it was Motion, Combustion, Shake, RED, Commotion, etc. They all had promising and worthwhile capabilities. Some of them are better than AE at specific, specialized things. But so many people are constantly seeing the next thing that will make AE obsolete. Yeah, sure.Adolfo Rozenfeld

Dave: I’m trying to figure out what exactly is it that you wanted to state. I mean, I said the right size is 720×480 with 1.2 PAR and you say, sorry the right size is 720×480?

This is all very true, but for the sake of helping the original poster, it’s worth noting that the banding you get out of an uncompressed device like the ones we’re mentioning is nowhere near what he’s getting with Firewire DV output.

In that case select the clip and go to Modify > Alpha type.

Nope. Not an Adobe issue. From what I understand, the Decklink truly is a 10 bit card (depending on model, even more than that) but only though SDI. The analog converters (for component I/O) apparently are 8 bit. That may not be true anymore for newer models. It was discussed heavily a couple of years ago. Still, I am not seeing much banding on the Decklink Extreme output.
As for the Quantel box being 8 bit, it also depends on the gradient technique. Some gradient generators have more aggresive dithering applied, ofr example.

I don’t know why you’re trying to reinvent the wheel, Dustin.
Just create your AE project using the NTSC DV widescreen preset. This will create a 720×480 Comp, with a Pixel Aspect ratio of 1.2. This is visually equivalent, in terms of aspect, to a 864×480 file with square pixels. That’s all there is to it.

That would be “wrong”, if that matters (though the aspect relationship is quite similar). The usually preferred square pixels equivalent for NTSC DV widescreen would be, again, 864×480. In any case, the result will have the same quality as a 720×480 comp with 1.2 PAR , which is native frame size/PAR relationship.

You can set up your project to 32 bpc/float all you want, but if you’re using a Firewire DV device for monitoring, then you’re gettting a 8 bpc preview with heavy compression on your video screen. Two routes: getting an uncompressed board for monitoring (very cheap these days), or if you’re really want to go Firewire DV, you’ll need to experiment with tiny amounts of monochrome noise to “break” the gradients and get rid of banding. Not as good as the first option, of course 🙂
PS: I see you have an iMac, then you would only have two options for uncompressed monitoring: one of the AJA IO LA or LD models (from $900, SD only) or the Matrox MXO ($1000, HD/SD but output only). Unfortunately, all other Decklink and AJA devices are internal cards which won’t work with the iMac.

If you don’t use a video monitor or a TV you really can’t have a clue about what you’re looking at (in FCP, I mean).
Also, if you export a movie with Quicktime DV PAL (the current settings for your sequence), then QT player will only show you half resolution preview. This is because Quicktime DV movies exported from FCP don’t have the high quality flag enabled by defau;t. In QT player go to preferences and check “Use high-quality video setting when available”.

Are you checking the results using an external video monitor or TV? FCP doesn’t show output quality in Canvas window.
