“Am I supposed to work in a 540×720 square pixel comp, and then before rendering place that comp inside a 480×720 NTSC DV comp?”
Only when working with apps which don’t support non-square pixels and when bringing those elements as Comp (since Comps inherit the comp settings from the still file). This spells “Illustrator” very clearly 🙂 It could be also the case for any application that can spit layered PSD files and it’s not Photoshop (since PS can handle non-square pixels since CS1).
“Could I work in a 480×720 square pixel comp and then just change the pixel aspect? will that distort the final output? will it distort the AE preview?”
If you bring square pixel elements into a Comp you create with non-square pixels, AE will take care of everything as long as it knows the nature of the incoming elements. Most of the time, AE guesses PAR from image dimensions. So if you bring any graphic that doesn’t match a typical video format, AE will interpret it as square and you’re good to go. So, you only want to avoid using typically non-square PAR video sizes set as square pixels. Or viceversa.

AE CS3 can use 3 GB of RAM *per process*, so with simultaneous processing in an 8-core system you could effectively take advantage of 24GB of RAM and have some more for using PS or any other application.

This is included in the color management functionality in AE CS3.
There will be a terrific PDF document explaining the correct settings for different workflows, including this one.Adolfo Rozenfeld

June 23, 2007 at 2:49 am in reply to: What The Heck? Trouble importing from Illustrator CS2You shouldn’t have to revert to such an old AI format. You can use the current AI format, as long as you enable the PDF compatible checkbox when saving.

Proably because AE 7 doesn’t know there’s an AI CS3 at all? 🙂
Did you enable the PDF option for AI files in the Save dialog?Adolfo Rozenfeld

It is indeed coming very soon. I don’t know if *this* soon 🙂

Richard: Since it’s not out yet, I’d say it’s a bit premature to start bugging 🙂

AE dropping standard is the best thing that could have happened for you.
They will let you upgrade to CS3 Professional (it’s still called that, even if there’s no standard version) at the same price former “Pro” users will pay.
Not bad!Adolfo Rozenfeld

Guys: Please be aware that the AE CS3 Public Preview is not a beta. In fact, you won’t find the word “beta” in the Adobe Labs page for AE CS3. It is prerelease, of course. But It’s 95 per cent (arbitrary figure) the final product, minus some third party encoders and effects that could not be included for licensing reasons. It’s safe to assume that an application that will ship so soon is not really in the middle of the testing process and that most bugs have been worked out already 🙂
I believe that, with some minor exceptions, it’s ready to handle production tasks. Especially the second build (posted on May 16th).The AE CS3 bet… I mean, Public Preview is fully compatible with release versions of CS3 applications and suites, but not with the older CS3 betas, like the Photoshop and Soundbooth previews.

June 7, 2007 at 3:40 am in reply to: AE CS3 Beta Preview Locks Up With MP Preference CheckedI have not seen these lock-ups. Make sure you’re using the Public Preview 2 (build x283) as some multiprocessing issues have been fixed for that one.
As for the Activity Monitor, you don’t want to check the main app’s usage but the AESelfLink instances.Adolfo Rozenfeld
