“I hope the new OSX can use more ram, and that the 3 gig wall gets knocked down!”

The wall is knocked down because you have eight instances getting 3 GB each!
Frankly, I only know one user (guess who) with more than 16 GB of RAM.
Doesn’t look like going over 24-26GB is an urgent matter at this time 🙂

Yes, on Win64 the limit is 4 GB per process.

[specialcase] “the Path Shape parameter now has a Geometry option. This means that you can use any shape object in Motion as the source for a Motion Path behavior.”

Specialcase: I completely missed this new feature! It was a strong need I had, having more flexibility in terms of repurposing existing vector based elements (like shapes) as motion paths. Very useful!

WAIT a second! This option is also there for Path text layout! This is a good day!
I always found the way Motion dealt with different path types (shape/mask/motion/text) was very… not flexible in terms of building from existing elements. That has changed, I have to say.

The wall is 24 GB (3GB per background process).
Having 32 GB is not bad (duh!) because on top of that you can have Photoshop and/or your NLE open on real memory.

June 4, 2007 at 7:42 pm in reply to: Macbook or MacBook Pro for AE!

FWIW, the Macbook is not supported by the new Final Cut Studio 2 and OpenGL acceleration will be minimal (if any) in After Effects CS3 with it.
I recommend the MacBook Pro, if you can justify the price difference.

It’s not a color management issue. The REC709 input profile is the right one. The problem is the way FCP handles gamma for some codecs/formats.
Try applying a gamma correction of 0.824 in AE (for example, in an adjustment layer). Credit to Chris Meyer for the number.

There’s no announcement yet regarding ship date.
It’s not just After Effects, but also Premiere Pro, Encore DVD, OnLocation and Ultra (joined by the already released Photoshop CS3 Extended, Illustrator CS3 and Flash CS3).

  • “the short answer is no. Motion works with 2d objects in 3D space… not 3D objects. ”

True. But if you save a PSD with a 3D layer, Photoshop stores a 2D bitmap render of the 3D model. And you do get that when opening it in Motion. I know it’s not as cool as importing 3D meshes and make them fly in 3D space, but not bad at all.

  • Well, I wouldn’t say I hate it. I just don’t feel at home with it and prefer the AE animation model (or almost any other animation model I know, for that matter!).

Of course, that works today if you have FCP/FCS.
The new announced support won’t require FCP.
Even if you are Mac-based and love Final Cut, you may not have it in every production machine.
This approach may make things easier for cross-platform workflows.

  • I believe the Flash output feature in Encore is great for repurposing a DVD project to the web. This is no small thing, really.
I am a bit alergic to the Flash UI and animation model, and would love to have an alternative (like Livemotion wanted to be). However, like Steve said, I don’t think Encore is designed to be flash authoring tool. Of course, the DVD specs are simple but wonderful things can still be created within those boundaries. But I am not sure it will give you enough options in terms of how things are load and/or replaced as you navigate the project. We’ll see.

Once said that, now that the former Marcomedia technologies are in the same house, I think it’s safe to assume that AE > Flash integration to get better and better with time. I would love to take shape layer or text animation from AE and wire the interactivity in Flash, for example, if it was reasonably easy to do.
