  • Can you effectively make a Flash website with Encore CS3 and AE CS3?

Posted by Daniel Haskett on May 30, 2007 at 10:42 am

    Hi there

Basically ive just been listening to the podcasts about CS3 and the new feature in encore of being to save out as a flash file sounds amazing! From what I can tell you could actually make a website in encore,as you are able to export a fully interactive flash file? Would it then be easy to put this online as a full website do you think? I mean would the file size and stuff still be good?

The main reason i ask is cause i really wanna do flash websites, but i use after effects and just cant get my head around flash. if itd be possible to use encore and AE together to basically create a website thatd be awesome! i imagine obviously there will be certain things you cant do….but i mean….am i right so far?

    Cheers!

    This is quite exciting….

Not to be the naysayer, but I think that Encore can’t provide as much interactivity as Flash, and you’ll run up against its limitations more often than you think. Oftentimes, even a simple rollover interaction beyond a DVD’s capabilities requires complicated Javascript in Flash. You’ll have to know the app extremely well to know what it can do, and you’ll end up saying “sorry, I can’t do that” more often than you like. And if you have to say that to a revision request in the middle of a project, the client might not like it. 🙂

In my opinion, if you want to do Flash websites, you should learn Flash.

    Just my opinion. 🙂

and is that even with CS3? cause from what they were saying, you can save out a whole menu you as an interactive flash file….do you still need to know code to do that?

I’m going out on a limb to say that I don’t expect Encore to offer any more interactivity beyond the DVD spec, which is limited for the sake of compatibility. I just don’t expect it to offer what Flash can.

And my point is: even a simple change to the way something rolls over might require Javascript programming beyond the DVD spec, and thus beyond what I expect Encore to be able to do.

At any rate, you would find more info in the Encore forum, no? 🙂

That is very true 🙂 ive posted on there too, i just know the AE forum always seems to get more replies and there are more people on it, but thanks very much for your help.

I think once i get CS3 ill have a little play to see how much can be done with it ….but yeah i dont think im gonna learn java anytime soon!

    cheers

Javascript, not java. Big diff. 🙂

I believe the Flash output feature in Encore is great for repurposing a DVD project to the web. This is no small thing, really.
I am a bit alergic to the Flash UI and animation model, and would love to have an alternative (like Livemotion wanted to be). However, like Steve said, I don’t think Encore is designed to be flash authoring tool. Of course, the DVD specs are simple but wonderful things can still be created within those boundaries. But I am not sure it will give you enough options in terms of how things are load and/or replaced as you navigate the project. We’ll see.

Once said that, now that the former Marcomedia technologies are in the same house, I think it’s safe to assume that AE > Flash integration to get better and better with time. I would love to take shape layer or text animation from AE and wire the interactivity in Flash, for example, if it was reasonably easy to do.

i’m glad it’s not just me hating Flash UI. I simply can not stand it.

Well, I wouldn’t say I hate it. I just don’t feel at home with it and prefer the AE animation model (or almost any other animation model I know, for that matter!).

I used to get a little lost in Flash, but the I saw the CartoonSmart tutorials website. This guy is a Flash genius, and his tutorials cover almost everything Flash can possibly be expected 9and not expected) to do.

Worth checking out if you want to learn Flash.
