During the Public Preview stage, PPro product manager Giles Baker revealed that P2/DVCPRO HD support was already in the works, and that they are hoping to add this functionality to PPro CS3 within this year.

You get vowels with accents on Win by pressing ALT + 160, 161, 162, etc.
On Mac it’s option + E and then vowel.

Yes, there was a typo indeed.

It’s important to refine the terminology here.

In AE CS3 (and CS3 only) “shape” and “shape layer” are very specific things. A new kind of vector-based object model you create and animate directly in AE.

You can bring graphics as separate layers from Photoshop if you import as Composition.

AI is a different case. It also allows you to import as comp, but if you want each AI object to be isolated, you want to make sure each graphic object is in a separate AI layer before importing as comp.

As of AE CS3, given that shape layers are a completely new feature, there is no way to bring what PS and/or AI call shapes and have them as AE shapes. PS shapes come as masked bitmaps (which is what they are in PS) and PS shapes come as vector layers, provided you separated them as one object per layer in AI and imported as Comp.

Masks, brushes and shapes can all be copied and pasted into any other by copying (and then targeting) the Path property inside of them.

It’s important to understand that shape layers offer the *possibility* of multiple shapes or groups per layer. It’s not an obligation 🙂

So, you can nust move the specific shape you want to use to a separate layer, and then apply the effect to that layer.

Bitmap effects are per layer not per shape or even shape group.
Path effects/operators (trim paths, wiggle paths, repeater, etc) are per group.

If you go to Adobe’s production studio web page, you’ll find an upgrade table. I believe there *is* an upgrade path to Production Studio from either.

After Effects CS3 is dramatically optimized for multiple cores/processors. Provided you have enough RAM (1 GB per core at least), it will launch an independent background process for each chore, and feed simultaneous frames to each one of them. As has been made evident in benchmarks all over the web, AE CS3 is among the applications which take the most juice out of multiprocessor configurations.

PS CS3 and AI CS3 are *partially* optimized for multiprocessing. There’s a very interesting blog entry by PS engineer Scott Byer on why the nature of Photoshop doesn’t allow such dramatic levels of multi-core optimizations as AE or 3D apps.

The first quote is probably for upgrading from AE standalone to Production Studio CS3, and the second from Creative Suite 2 to Production Studio. In this case, as long as you have the CS2 serial numbers, everything will be fine.

  • Neither of those will provided support for DVCPRO HD in Quicktime containers, as captured and handled by Final Cut Studio.
