Ah, you might have mentioned that you’re using VRay. If so you want to use the VRay advanced material.

  • SSS will transmit GI light, but it only seems to work with the Quasi Monte Carlo GI method. All in all it would be dreadfully slow if you want to get a clean result. I’m not familiar with the MR shader you used but if it works, and this is something you do all the time, that may be the way to go.

I just had a play with Octane Render in Cinema and it does a nice job surprisingly quickly, but that’s another cost and it requires at least one decent NVidia card.

  • Cinema’s native (physical) renderer will transmit GI light through transparent and translucent materials. Is there a specific effect you’re trying to achieve?

Use a gray material with no specular channel and you should be good to go.

The crispness of bitmap textures in renders is affected by the material channel’s Sampling setting and the render AA settings. By default Cinema assigns MIP sampling when you load a bitmap in a texture slot. MIP reduces flickering in animation but it also makes the bitmap a little blurry. If you want it really crisp use Square sampling, or turn sampling off altogether.

Time offset only affects clones that have keyframed animation. For your scene I would use another random effector set to affect clone weight to make the explosion appear more gradual. In the scene below I keyframed the falloff weight of the random effector controlling translation and the strength of the random effector controlling weight. Also put in a delay effector to give it a little ease-in.

Use polygon selection tags to restrict the textures to the polygons on which you want the decals to appear.

  • How much RAM do you have in your system? Not sure if that could be the issue but a thought…

If you tick the “mix textures” box in the yellow material’s texture tag the yellow will be added to the underlying textures. If you want more control you can use the yellow material’s alpha channel.

  • Should work fine. Set the cloner to object mode, reference the plane, make sure the “align clone” option is checked.
