Click the texture button in your material channel (the one that shows the name of your file) and go to the animate tab. There you’ll find settings for start/end frame, frame rate, etc.

The Spline Wrap object is what you’re looking for. It’s easier than MSA because you don’t need an extra FFD deformer.

Yep. MoGraph is far and away the easiest, most flexible way to do it.

I believe Cinema comes with a TP preset for emitting particles from a surface.

Regarding that kind of smoke, it’s actually a very had thing to achieve convincingly in 3D. Ultimately it requires fluid simulation, which isn’t available in Cinema and, in any case, is very cpu intensive.

The best results I’ve seen used animated geometry with fresnel in the transparency channel.

There’s been a lot of debate over whether this is a good thing, but I personally think it’s great. You can right-click any parameter in the Attributes Manager and there’s a help link that takes your directly to the relevant part of the html docs. Much faster than looking it up in the paper manual or .pdf.

It’s not possible directly, but you could render a separate pass for your object and composite it over the dof render in post. That won’t work if your object is transparent, however.

[Chaos Wrangler] “That sounds perfect, You may not need character stuff now but the net render, Thinking Particles, Advanced render, etc. will be welcome after you get through the basics. Welcome to the insanity.”
    I second that.

I haven’t checked the license (would be a good place to start), but AFAIK it’s okay. You can use the same serial numbers.

Yes, you can either put the textures in the directory with your .c4d file or set a texture path in preferences.
