You could use subpoly displacement in the material to create some depth.

Have you tried playing with the dxf preferences in Cinema? Is “2D Elements” checked? Was the file exported with polylines?

If you can’t get it to work you might see if you can get the file in Illustrator 8 or EPS format.

This is just how it is, I’m afraid. My understanding is that, subsequent to v8, Adobe made changes to the Illustrator format that make it impractical to support.

[Joseph M. Morgan] “However, let me ask… is there a way to do what I do in After Effects (I think I’ve seen your name there)? That is, in AE, I can put arbitrary controls (sliders, etc) on something and then connect properties (or property expressions) to it. I was hoping for something more like that… that is… something more like a dimmer switch, on-off switch, etc.”

Yes, you can do that with Xpresso.

Personally I would just use an alpha mapped texture on a plane unless there’s some kind of extreme closeup.

[Dave ‘The Brave’ Wiffola] “The client likes to change his mind alot”

Isn’t “client” and “likes to change his mind a lot” a bit redundant? 🙂

Sounds like you decided to go the Xpresso route, but for future reference, double-clicking on the selection object in the Object Manager also selects all the objects.

That must be an old tutorial. The object buffer settings are now found in the compositing tag.

I don’t think there’s a direct way of doing what you’re trying to do. Best as I can tell you would have to render multiple passes of the relief object — one for each alpha. 🙁

Another option is to use a Selection Object set up to select all of your lights. Then you can adjust whatever light properties you want for all of them. You can adjust properties either absolutely by simply typing in a number or moving a slider, or you can change them in a relative fashion by typing in the numerical field, “x*[]”. For example, if you wanted all your lights to be 1/2 as bright, you would type in “x*.5”.
