i know how to use Activity Monitor – how do you think i know FCP is not releasing the ram?

Its grabbed just over 3gb – the system tends to use around a gig, probably because I had several projects open simultaneously.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with the system – its done this since day one, and i have read plenty of reports from other users mentioning the exact same problem.

If anything, Jeff, you’re the lucky one.

because after a busy morning editing, FCP usually has grabbed all my ram (4gb) and refuses to release any. Even if i quit FCP that ram is still unusable, so if i want to use any other program, especially ram hungry ones like After Effects, unless i can release the ram, then i’m stuck with unacceptably slow virtually memory!

I’m not entirely sure what you are trying to do…but you might want to try the Distort Tool (D) – with this you can select the individual corners of a shot and reposition them to give you a pseudo 3dwarp.

March 20, 2008 at 12:47 pm in reply to: an addon to Final Cut for detection of scenes

I was given a demo of “CatDV” (https://www.squarebox.co.uk/) some weeks ago at a trade fair and was amazed at the way it can accurately do scene detection as well as a whole raft of other features. Its on my shopping list for the very near future.

its certainly worth downloading the trial version.

i reckon Peter Wiggins is the guy you need to speak to. He cuts the Tour de France each year using FCP. I believe he has live feeds going into his raid, and software that converts thse to quicktimes that can be edited whilst the stream is still being ingested.

He has a website you can contact him through….https://peterwiggins.com/

March 6, 2008 at 10:45 am in reply to: OT – Ad scripting courses in UK?

    good thoughts Walter.

We are on the same wavelength there…i have been contacting local colleges this morning.

I think i am probably going to have difficulties finding a course specific to the needs of a 20sec commercial, as all the ones i have seen so far are aimed at people wanting to write a movie or make a documentary, both of which are completely different ways of communicating.

I realise advertising is less about story and more about selling – but i need our staff to realise there is more to selling than listing features!

have a look at the coloured line along the top of the timeline – if its red above the offending sound files, then they need to be rendered (i don’t have fcp open and can’t remember the exact button – you need to select the option called render for playback only)

It could be that the timeline is set to a different audio setting (44.1 / 48khz, or 16bit, 24 bit, etc ). Sometimes you find that even if the files claim to be the same as the timeline it still needs rendering….don’t ask me why though, i don’t know)

Any way you probably just need to render them.

I’m not sure if this will help, as i’ve not tried it myself….i read something yesterday about a problem with subclips and the suggestion was to highlight the clips in the timeline, then right click :make clips independent.

If you do this before hitting send to shake it might help?

    then again it might not.

    worth a try…..
