September 18, 2014 at 6:27 pm in reply to: Motion 5 appears to have wrecked FCP7 on my Mac

if i’d thought of it first it might have been ok.

I never use Motion anyway, these are old graphics i made years ago. Whilst i did download all the latest Apples apps two weeks ago when the new Mac went in, I have never opened Motion 5 so was surprised when the Motion 4 file opened 5.

Whatever the cause its worth being aware of how flaky things can get if youre not totally on the ball.

I dont think Apple give a hoot anymore!

ahh, right…never realised the physical renderer worked that way. I really dont get enough time to learn this software properly.

theres not really too much happening – its a model of an opaque plastic toy with a few clear plastic bottles, a box mapped with the product artwork, three lights, some global illumination and a camera tracking in an arc around the static models.

The model was made in R15, and i did notice the warning that three of the models no longer had access to “real Fresnel” but i could not figure out how to remove that, as it just no longer appeared anywhere.

What puzzled me is why a Mac with so much more processing and ram would take almost as long to render each frame as my laptop.

I’m pretty sure I did fill out one of the bug reports at the time, Todd.

Since then I have restarted the mac in recovery mode to repair permission, and so far it seems to be behaving again.

January 10, 2014 at 9:16 am in reply to: So do you ever see a Graphics job posting with this?

Personally, i prefer being a multi-skilled post-production person. I like being the one who completes the job on so many different disciplines. Its taken me nearly 25yrs to get here, but spending several years honing skills in one area then being able to develop new skills in a different one has allowed me to gradually combine all those skills into a role where i can do pretty much everything thats needed to get the job finished and finished well.

Having such variety stops me getting bored doing the same stuff over and over.

The only real puzzle nowadays is how to describe the job and how to quantify the value of someone who can do the work of 6 or 7 disciplines?
Whilst i like the title Editor, it means very little to anyone outside the industry, and really does not do justice to the job done by a one-man band post-production facility!

for me, the giveaway is the way both trucks bounce/vibrate in unison – noticeable mainly on van dammes close-up. I have never seen two vehicles, even that close, that move as if locked together. No road is that perfect.

how are you deleting the clip?
I have never had that happen once in the seven years i’ve been working on FCP!

It looks like you’re using Ripple Delete (shift, delete) when you really just want to use Delete. DO not hold down the shift button.

October 8, 2013 at 11:38 am in reply to: Moving text with images

I would not try to generate a scroll and pause it before moving on…that will get very complicated very quickly.

For me, i would create a different text clip for each individual name. Then place the text above the scenery layer and below the train window (this will keep the text outside the window). You can trim the text clip so its not running for the duration of the project if its not visible…this way you can have multiple text files on the same video layer, one after the other.

Then i would double click the text to open in the viewer and use keyframes to manually fly the text in from one side to the centre point, then out the other side. Do this on the Motion tab/Center.

Once you have got the timing right, you might want to add motion blur (but don’t do this until everything else is right as it will take a lot of rendering ( i happen to like using 16 samples and 50% its a bit more believable than the default setting).

Im sure others will have different methods, but thats a pretty foolproof and simple way to achieve the effect.

August 16, 2013 at 9:53 am in reply to: Mocha AE puzzle

kevin – every tutorial i have seen from Mocha shows the Anchor Point keyframes being deleted. Its worked for me in the past, and if you don’t delete them, the effect does nto work.

Roland – yes, definitely the Transform date (i also tried the corner pin just in case but not what i needed!)

I have solved the issue by going back to FCP and exporting the shot rather than sending it to AE via an XML.

Re tracked the exported shot and it worked with very little finessing.

    c’est la vie!
