You do not mention what type of media you are trying to export. But the error message suggests you are working with HDV or something similar.

These compressed HD formats (long-GOP meaning “long Groups-of-Pictures”)will not export as QT reference files. You will need to export as a full QT file or another format.

Make plans to budget for a copy of Sound Forge on your Avid system too.

If they took my Sound Forge away a lot of screaming, pouting, and rolling around on the floor would follow.

Sound Forge EQ and a nice little touch of the Wave Hammer is what you ultimately want. But you already know that!

Are you using OMF media? MXF? Both?

We had this problem recently, and it was corrupt media files. I parsed them out by project using MDV and placed them in different folders. Then I used the SUBST command to create virtual drives, so these projects all came back up.

I narrowed down to about 600 files that had the problem in them somewhere. With that small number of files, the Avid would finally scan and index them properly, but the database file blew up huge in size. With those files included in a larger overall group of files, Avid was unable to index them.

I recommend starting the procedure of dividing your files to look for corrupt critters. If you need to get a project back online right away, parse the files for that project and put them in the appropriately-named Avid subfolder of a project-named folder. Use the SUBST command to create a virtual drive out of that folder and start the Avid. You should have that project back up and running.

On the other hand, if the problem files are in THAT project, well. . .

In what ways do you think it doesn’t look good?

If lighting was not what you wanted, that will be harder to repair. If it just has that real “video” look – that is usually the deeper depth of field video provides unless you work to avoid it when shooting.

Does the video look “cool” overall as far as color temp goes? A little careful color correction to warm it up may help.

Ultimately, unless you take steps to change the look when you shoot it, video looks like – well, video.

I have not worked with Avid FreeDV. It may be a limitation of the free software.

You are likely missing whatever codec the original files were created with. The white or black screen with audio is often exactly that.

You would need to find out what codec was used to create the files and install that codec on your machine.

  • Is there a reason you do not simply make the QT straight out of the Avid?

When you go to Export, go into settings and select Quicktime instead of QT Ref. Specify the pixel size by selecting custom rather than using the standard Avid DV codec, and you are on your way.

  • To the best of my knowledge, you have only two SDI interface options. One is an SDI Mojo box, and the other is an Adrenaline DNA box.

If the Avid software will speak to any others, I do not know about it.

    I don’t know, but I’ve been told. . .

I have heard the 8000 series cards don’t speak Avid very well, but the 7000 series has had some success.

With that said, I don’t think any of the GeForce cards are on the approved list, so you would be on your own no matter what.

I have a Sony Sony PVM 20L5 in our MC Adrenaline room. Installed a few years ago, and it is still working great. Very pleased with it. No experience with the others.
