Oh it’s realtime… But here’s the lowdown: it’s not very good. Rather soft image – and only the anamorphic setting looks ok, the letterbox is terrible.
However, it’s a great timesaver if you need a quick SD dub make from HD. And it totally works without hassles or hiccups.

I don’t think any Mac using tech-hipsters use Safari. everyone uses Firefox.

Thanks guys – and sorry Shane, you are right in the east coast point of view.
I talked to a couple mix houses in NY today and they tend to keep the levels lower – matching -20 digital tone to 0 VU on analog decks. Then I talked to some of our mix houses in LA and they all mix hotter: setting -20 tone to -3VU on analog. And we’ve always calibrated our analog decks to -3 (not that we ever make analog tapes. maybe 3 BetaSP a year, and haven’t fired up a 3/4″ in probably 2 years).

I have to respectfully disagree – I’ve got literally hundreds of commercials in our vault with final mixes done and laid to Digi by the big audio post houses in LA and they all tend to peak around -6 in FCP. And like I said, I’ve done at least 15 music videos mixed where I have it now and they’ve never been rejected (big bands – MTV, FUSE, VH1 aired them no problems).
I can just turn it down more and keep laying off quieter dubs. But I’m really concerned that I’m not seeing the whole story in FCP which I’ve been trusting so far.

I’d love the AVID featurewhere it matches your IN frame to tape – instead of having to type it in and risk human error. Especially with that 8 point font Apple decided to use for TC windows.

If you’re upconverting the highest quality Digitbeta anamorphic to HD – it can looks fairly decent. It will never LOOK like real HD, but it can look pretty decent for what it is.

I think you’re confused as to what a Blackmagic Card is:
The card does NOT provide any realtime. It’s a card designed to get professional grade digital video in and out of your Mac to professional machines like Digibeta or HDCAM.
Motion, After Effects, etc… do not use the Blacmagic card EXCEPT to give you a SDI video preview to an external monitor. Motion will gain performance by having a beefier DISPLAY card in the Mac (i.e. NVIDIA with DVI out). After Effects will run faster when they make a universal binary for your Mac Pro.

HD is only 16:9 correct. So, in essence, the anamorphic SD stuff is 16:9 too (but squished into the 4:3 frame size for transport).
If you’re shooting Varicam I’m assuming he’s going to be giving you DVCPRO-HD tapes. In that case, you might want to just use compressor, or the upconvert on the DVCPRO-HD deck to turn the DV-50 into 720/1080i. DVCPRO-HD codec doesn’t take much room or bandwidth, so you can totally edit in HD.

1) I wouldn’t color grade on an Apple or Dell, ever. It WILL be off.
2) You’ll need to do some manual calibration in the HDlink utility to get the LCD “pretty darn close.” Will never match a CRT, but is good enough for everyday work. -
Well – I laid off a tape and no, the BM does NOT clamp color or luma in HD.
