  • Edit to tape error message

No matter what I’ve tried, “Edit to Tape” consistently gives me the same error message:
    “Incompatible Compression Settings
You may have attempted to output a clip with compression settings that do not match the current output settings. Try nesting the clip in a sequence with the correct settings”

Ok. My entire pipeline was created with a blackmagic NTSC sequence, with footage captured with the Blackmagic NTSC 8bit codec, and I’m outputing Blackmagic NTSC video. But all that asside, I get the same message if I’m trying to “edit to tape” an HD project with all HD settings, or a DV project with a firewire DV format; it doesn’t seem to matter. Final cut tells me to try using the correct settings, but gives me no guidance or directions as to where or what the wrongs settings are, or where I should look to get the correct settings. Any takers?
    Thanks

Try changing the in points on the timeline and tape to a new timecode. A few frames will suffice. This has worked for me in the past. FCP just refuses to edit on certain timecodes for some reason. Sometimes a restart of the computer will fix the problem but try shifting the in points first.

Well, this has been a consistent, across the board problem. In fact, we’ve never gotten this feature passed this error message. We’ve tried it on multiple tapes, on multiple timecodes, on drop-frame and non-Drop-frame timelines, on firewire DV, component Beta, Composite DVcam, and even on our HDCam deck. Our computers are restarted quite frequently and the problem still remains. Furthermore, we have 4 different Final Cut Systems and none of these do it.

I haven’t posted this Stock Answer in a while:

#18 Edit to Tape “Incompatible Compression Settings”

    Shane’s Stock Answer #18

To Edit to Tape you either need to have your sequence loaded in the VIEWER, or simply drag it from the BROWSER onto the Edit to Tape window and choose Assemble Edit or Insert Edit.

For both methods, the tape needs to be black and coded and have TC already on it. And you need to mark and IN point in the ETT window.

I’d love the AVID featurewhere it matches your IN frame to tape – instead of having to type it in and risk human error. Especially with that 8 point font Apple decided to use for TC windows.

To avoid that human error, I usually park my timeline cursor on my In point, move the mouse cursor up to the timecode display in the upper left corner of the timeline, click once to highlight it, copy, and then paste into the In point box in the ETT window. Takes my bad typing skills right out of the mix.
