mmmm….bacon! I just went ahead and made a 30fps DVD.
We’re all pretty ticked off. Spent months conforming a beautiful 1080 23.98fps D5 which we delivered as a master…. made 35mm prints from it… etc…. and somewhere in their pipeline they made a 30fps NTSC downconversion to press to DVD. Never trust anyone else with your hard work 🙂

It does a pure 3:2 pulldown. no problems whatsoever. looks NICE… will even do it with 23.98fps HD down converted to NTSC

Thanks, makes sense. Do you have a guess to why the clips labeled “720p24” with a video rate of “59.97” come out either 23.98 or 59.94 fps? Seems like a flagging problem…. but the 59.97 quicktimes look like video, and the 23.98 look filmic.

That’s curious. Apple probably did pay the fees to allow the encoders to be used commercially – I’m sure they leased the technology to encode these formats from someone else.
and…. what in the world are you doing reading SLA’s on a Friday afternoon!

Transcoding it won’t gain you much. It’s already been crunched to DVC-HD land and whatever cons are associated with that codec are a permanent part of the quicktime files. HCoding to Pro-Res will give you some small advantages when adding filters, etc…. as the compression is better. But frankly it would be a total waste of time. You’re much better off recapturing to Pro Res.
Having said that, DVC-HD is a very quick and stable codec for editing. Unless your director really wants to do “finishing” work while you’re still in edit. Depends on the scope of the project.

The Lhe puts out 2 channel XLR analog audio, which is great. You can get a small 6 channel Mackie mixer for $200, and then a pair of powered/shielded speakers (just got a pair of KRK Rockit 5″ for an edit bay, sound pretty good for the price and size) for about $300
