P2 confusion
I’m helping some guys evaluate test footage they shot on P2. Looks like the settings on the camera were all over the place because I’m getting 60fps stuff, 30fps stuff, and 24fps stuff.
Can someone explain in the p2 import dialog what the difference between 720pN24 and 720p24 is? Both convert to 23.98 quicktimes and look fine. I’m not familiar with this type of source….don’t know what to tell them.

720pn24 is native.
it is 23.98 frames per second.
the other has the “look” of 24p, but it is still 29.97
use 720pn24, i think, when you are going back to film, or what to do slow motion. i “think” the slow mo option turns off, unless your in 720pn24 mode. I may be wrong.
if you arent doing slow motion (why use that camera, lol) and shoot it 29.97 and keep it in videoland forever

Thanks, makes sense. Do you have a guess to why the clips labeled “720p24” with a video rate of “59.97” come out either 23.98 or 59.94 fps? Seems like a flagging problem…. but the 59.97 quicktimes look like video, and the 23.98 look filmic.

The camera has 3 settings for 720, 24p.
24P and 24PA are both “24 over 60”, IOW, they both record 23.98P with pulldown to a 59.94P video stream. They do this by adding duplicate frames in a 2:3 pattern, very much like adding extra fields to make 24P over 30i. The difference between 24P and 24PA is in the pulldown pattern, a standard 2:3:2:3 pattern or a 2:3:3:2 pattern.
24PN records only 23.98 frames per second, no duplicate frames. This saves space on the cards (and your hard drives!), so you get more recording time on a card. Very handy in the field.
Likewise, 30P records duplicate frames to make a “30 over 60” video stream. 30PN records only 29.97 fps, saving space on the cards & extending recording time.
