    Hi All…

New user, love the forum. I’ve searched for this topic, but don’t find anything. I know FCP has the 4 or 8 point garbage mattes for quick & dirty cutouts. Is there a plugin available to get the equivalent of Avid’s Animatte? Or is there a way to layer the 8 point matte to get finer control over the cutout? Or is there a paint filter/plugin that can be used to simply paint or draw a matte (staying within FCP)?

Though I’ve been editing for 20 years, I’ve never learned After Effects (we have graphics departments at the networks who are very territorial about these things!). Am I gonna have to learn AE just to do custom travel mattes?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jeff M.

There’s a plugin called Silhouette FX. It has a great paint and a rotomask function. But you’ll have to spend a little time learning the interface.

Just checked out their website. Looks intense. Not to mention $295. But almost certainly worth the cost. Love the variable edge softness feature.

CharlieX, have you used this plugin? Does it work directly in FCP, or is the footage exported, treated and reimported?

It works in FCP as a filter. it does cost a little, but there’s not many options that work in FCP – exporting and importing footage is a pain in the ass. You could probably use Motion to do rotomattes too, but honestly I’ve never liked that program in the slightest.

I use SFX ALL the time for small roto and paint jobs.

Thanks for the info. I’ll probably go for it.

I think you can download a demo to try it out.

    Try CHV https://www.chv-plugins.com/

We use their Garbage Matte Plug-in that works great directly in FCP with 5, 10, 20 and 40 pt options. They also have a full motion tracking bundle that should do everything Animatte does in the Avid.
