Understood Skip but to avoid filling up the card I was planning shooting in SP mode and then downloading through firewire to an HDV deck. Would the pictures be as good a quality as your suggestion? I can’t yet edit the files otherwise I would of course shoot in HQ mode full res.

To get HDV from the EX1 you have to shoot in SP mode. I don’t think that you can get SD (or DV) from the camera at all. Most editing systems will re conform anyhow.

Jeez Steve, I’ve read it 20 times and it’s still confusing! Who writes these things – the Z1 was not an easy read either.

David C, I’m intrigued as I’m buying a EX1 next month. I spoke to Boris himself at the London Broadcast show last month and he was pretty cagey on the EX (or XDCAM) situation. At present I propose recording in the SD mode and taking the video down the firewire out to the Sony HDV deck on to tape. I edit at present by taking HDV from the deck through Convergent design’s HD-Connect into Media 100 as HD. I hope that your surprise at NAB will be positive and that whatever you are going to do for EX files will apply to those of us still using sytems with the HDx board as opposed to the new AJA board. Can you comment???

Jim Watt, I am surprised by your comments re. the view finder on the EX1. We know that all these finders are inferior to the ‘proper’ high res ones on the larger cameras but Sony say that the new ones on the EX1 and even the Z7 are much higher res than the Z1. I hate the Z1 finder but having ‘played’ with the EX1 it does seem to be a bit better – not a lot – but better!

Thanks Michael, see my post on the HDV forum. I do feel now that I’m on the right track.

All these problems that people are reporting have been troubling me but I hesitate to ask too many questions!

I get this harmonic in audio that I am acquiring with video. I hear it whenever the clip is played either from a bin or timeline and is something I have noticed only with version 12. I ignore it because when a timeline is either mastered to tape or encoded into a DVD the audio plays perfectly.

Peter, yes I find that on the occasions I need to edit in SD I still take my HDV from my M10 deck, (firewire from deck, SDI into Media 100) as HD which I obtain through the Convergent Design HD-Connect as you suggest. This works perfectly with machine control and I then downscale if required within Media 100. Media 100 does not like getting DV from these HDV decks.

David, it’s simpler than that. If I have a project, maybe been in existence for weeks it’s in my Project Folder within Media 100. I boot up, open Media 100 and straight away get the box asking me to name a new project. It is no big deal because it takes a second to cancel that and then click on my Project icon and I get my folder with the projects and I can open whichever one I am working on. Just a slight irritation that’s all, but I am amazed that you didn’t know about it.

No, David C. it has been happening for months, if not years, ever since I have been editing in HD, that’s from version 11 isn’t it?
