Beware though relying too literally on the manual! That indicates that you can record to an HDV deck when shooting in SP mode (firewire) but seems to suggest that you have to be actually shooting in order to do this. There is no mention being able to transfer video from the files on the card. In order to do this you have to be in ‘Media’ mode, enable the firewire connection in the menu and play the clips with (of course) the deck recoding to tape.

I have just transferred HDV direct as video from the EX1 via firewire to the HDV deck Sony M10. Could you not do this and then, if they can’t play the tape, make an SD DVD?

No Joyce, it doesn’t go in as HDV, Media 100 won’t take HDV. I convert from HDV to HD (Convergent Design HD-Connect) and then it goes in. It also has to come out HD (or downscaled to DV). How you get it back to HDV I don’t know!

Joyce, Firstly HDV isn’t HD, it’s HDV. Secondly Media 100 doesn’t handle HDV, only HD. I upgrade my HDV (Convergent Design HD-Connect) to uncompressed HD and if I need an HD master have to rent a VERY expensive HD deck to do this. For other masters such as DVCAM I use the very good Media 100 downscale and then master through firewire. As they say above, HD has to come out of Media 100 through HD-SDI only. HDV not at all.

Chris, I am not going into a DSR 20 directly. I am going into the HDV M10 deck, then up to HD into Media 100 edit then downscale and into the DSR 20 as DVCAM. All this because Media 100 can’t take XDCAM yet and the HD in through SDI has embedded audio which it also can’t take! What a performance, film was never like this!

Chris, vital question for me. Which would look better, shoot in HQ and downconvert to SD in camera thence to DV tape into a DSR 20 and edit as DV, or shoot in SP then down to tape to the HDV M10. I then convert to uncompressed HD through Convergent Design’s HD-Connect for editing in Media 100 HD. For digital tape and DVD distribution I then of course have to downscale either in Media 100 (very good) or for DVD’s in BitVice (even better downscale). With the former route I don’t of course have the option of an HD master for future use. How soon will HD become the norm, many years yet I think.

Rafael, I am getting my new EX1 this week and will be shooting in SP mode which is HDV I believe. That way I get 140 minutes on two 16 gb cards and can transfer the media to tape via firewire. That is presumably not quite what you meant though. The camera only shoots XDCAM (HQ mode) or HDV (SP mode) I believe.

Thank you David, sorry if I missed your previous news. Actually I am aware that you can now take video direct from the camera via SDI into Media 100 but that is with embedded audio and the HDx versions cannot accept embedded audio in the best resolution mode, only if the media is in HDV mode. I know it complicated for your kit but others are managing it!

David C, sorry to be a pain in the a…..e but as I’m now embarking on the great Sony EX1 journey (for many photographic reasons), could we have some words of encouragement from you regarding your ambitions relating to supporting the XDCAM codec? As you know I personally, would also welcome re assurance that whatever you come up with in this field would apply to those of us with the HDx board system. Maybe you don’t want to be specific at this stage and I would understand that but the continuing silence on this is disturbing.

Thanks Skip, sorry I misled you, it seems that I will do better by recording and outputting HDV for the time being. No Aaron, I’m not on Premiere Pro but the marvellous Media 100, it’s just that they are taking their time to sort XDCAM as they say they are finding it a complicated codec.
