But why do you want an HDV tape master, who can play it? What we really want to do is go to HD DVD. I find that HDV originated media even when edited as uncompressed HD, gives awful DVD’s after downscaling in either Media 100 or in BitVice for encoding. The DV tape is fine but the DVD awful. Whether it helps editing in HD having upscaled from HDV is a moot point but I take note of everyone’s advice (Floh included) not to edit in the HDV codec. What gives on the Blu-Ray front? Friends say Sony is blocking the playing of any Blu-Ray burnt disc that is not licenesed by the studios, true or false?

David C, note above a post enquiring about XDCAM Ex 1 support, this really is more important than HDV considering the worldwide demand for this camerea and codec. Plese, please, when you manage it, will it work with the pre intel Mac G5 and your HDx board.

I did the same. Being left eye dominant is much worse when using a big shoulder mounted camera (and firing an army rifle!).

Don, sorry to but in on your thread but I have a query regarding XDCAM Transfer. I can’t find the site to download this free software. Also can you please confirm that it will run on the pre intel Mac G5 as the browzing pack supplied with the camera will only run on the intel Mac. As I edit with Media 100 and they are not yet up to speed with XDCAM and the EX1 codec, I hope to be able to import the QT .mov files into Media 100. But I need the trandsfer tool which I am led to understand will convert the EX1’s files into QT .mov. Am I right? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated on this.

Derek, that’s brilliant, I have been asking questions about this for days. I wonder why they set the system like this, you would think that the figure shown would always be the one in operation at the time. I thought that the preset was one you specified elsewhere in the menu if you wanted to change the default one. How come a PP would overwrite that? Anyhow, thanks a lot for that, I’m away from my camera at present but I’ll experiment as per your info.

I also edit in HD and either down convert within my Media 100 editing system for DVCAM tape masters or for DVD I let BitVice do the down convert as well as the encode. Both these down converts provide excellant quality and are known for this feature. I don’t understand why Doug Jensen suggests down converting before editing for DV. I always thought that it was best to stay in HD for as long as possible in the post process.

Derek, that’s meant to be the point of Picture Profile because, among other settings, you can dial in a Kelvin number. My question was why does the Kelvin number displayed on the screen when you’re shooting not tally with the figure you set in your PP? Another way to ‘cheat’ your white card is to use a warmer card from warm.cards.com (or something like that anyway). All this is wonderfully explained by Doug Jensen in his EX1 two disc DVD by Vortex Media but the answer to my query doesn’t seem to be covered.

Many thanks Floh, I will try it providing the software works with the Pre Intel Mac because the Clip Browser is only supported by the Intel Mac.

I’m told that yes, audio is embedded. I can’t take embedded audio into my Media 100 but I did try to run video through the SDI lead but the signal wasn’t recognized.
