Chris, how are you getting your EX1 video into Media 100? I have done this from the camera via SDI but as the audio is embedded I can’t handle that on my version with the pre intel chip Mac G5. I am hoping (see my other post) that Media 100 is working on support for the file based media from this camera.

Hey fellers, let’s please have support for XDCAM first, the new EX1 SxS file based camera is selling like crazy all over the world and I hope (and believe) that Media 100 are working on this. Please don’t distract them!

Alan, I’m one of the ‘little people’ too.
Steve, I’m glad I’m wrong but no one has suggested exactly how we proceed with encoding (from an HD timeline), burning and then playing Blu-Ray through a projector or TV. Do we have to license or not, if so how? Will the standard Sony players play our DVD’s?
So much conflicting information and from Sony a deafening silence!

Yes Alan but I’m being told that Sony are being ‘dog in the manger’ by restricting their players to only play the big commercial discs to prevent people burning their own copies. True or false? Can’t get the difinitive answer.

How do propose to play your Blu-Ray DVD’s, I am told that the Sony players will only play studio features and specially licensed material?

Craig, yes I asked and Boris and his team are working on it and I’m sure will crack it this year. I certainly could go direct in HDV but as many have said that is a great acquisition codec but not one for editing. I could of course cut XDCAM on FCP, Prem Pro or Avid but am a great fan of Media 100 and really want to stay with them at almost any cost.
Don, yes, the main advantage of shooting SP is the extended capacity of the cards – they are still too damn expensive – but that will change within a year or so.

Craig, I know that this is slightly off the original topic but can I ask you whether I’m doing the best I can given my current kit. I am shooting in SP mode because my Media 100 can’t support EX files. I then download my SP (HDV) material through firewire from the camera to my HDV deck (Sony M10). I then edit in full HD by taking the HDV through Convergent Design’s HD-Connect. For distribution I then master to either HDCAM (expensively!) or downconvert within Media 100 to DVCAM and also encode and convert in BitVice for SD DVD’s. If I shot in HQ mode I can’t go into Media 100 in HD direct because the SDI from the camera has embedded audio and my Media 100 version can’t take embedded audio. Why change from the Z1 to the EX1 you may ask. For the larger chips, less DOF, better low light, better focussing arrangements and (eventually) to shoot in HD. But my post route is a mess at present!

Be careful about the new card recording if you are editing in Media 100. As Floh knows, Media 100 can’t yet support this new Sony codec but (as the owner of the new Sony EX 1) I very much hope that they will be able to by the end of this year.

I have carefully compared footage shot both at HQ (full 1920) with that on SP (HDV 1440) and although there was a difference it was difficult to spot. Mind you I was viewing on the Sony PVM 14” monitor in SD. When encoded and burnt to DVD the difference was still small. There is of course the matter of card space and SP gives you much more capacity on a shoot.

I have played video via composite on a TV with audio BUT I had to take the audio out of the AV output.
