Come on Noah! I can imagine how he felt and what better way to describe it. We are all grown up here and all get frustrated by technical problems interfering with our creative processes.

It’s just that I was reluctant to post my E Mail address publicly since I already get so much spam as I suppose we all do, how do they get our addresses?
My current workflow with media from the EX1 is to shoot in SP mode (which is HDV 1440 / 1080i) for the simple reason that although 1920 / 1080 video can go from the camera into Media 100 via the SDI out it has the audio embedded and my version 12.1.1 can only take embedded audio in SD. So I convert the HDV (Convergent Design HD-Connect) to HD for editing in Media 100.
That is why I’m, in common with many other new EX1 users, very keen to learn how Media 100 are getting on with the job of cracking the codec so we can stick with the best editing system there is. I hope we don’t have to go through too many hoops in unwrapping the files, what we want is acquisition straight in to bins if possible. Are there any Media 100 users with new EX1’s experimenting like me and waiting for developments?

Kieran, why off list may I ask, the EX1 question is a burning one and I, for one, would love to know what other users of this camera are doing and what Media 100 are doing.

These stupid little ‘buttons’ on the top are a flaming nuisance as they are so easily pressed by your fingers as you pick up the camera. It is the same with the Z1, I’m surprised that there haven’t been more complaints.

I can’t get HD with embedded audio into my version 12.1.1 with the non Intel G5, only SD, I can get the HD video in but not the audio. Am I now to understand that the new version 12.5 will take HD with embedded audio through SDI or will I need the new Intel G5? An audio delay I could manage until they fix it but I need to know before finalising a workflow for the EX1 camera. Anyone know the answer please, maybe Scott?

Craig, at present I shoot in SP (HDV) and push it through Convergent Design’s HD-Connect and edit in HD with Media 100 (won’t for the time being support EX files). Do you think that your new magic idea would result in better picture quality bearing in mind your warning of some quality loss?

Chris, I really notice the aliasing on the DVD’s, then it’s really annoying, on tape it’s less of a problem but I still don’t see too much improvement with HQ but that’s only viewing SD via component. Lucky fellow with the girlies, worth going with the HDCAM recorder!

Chris, do you think that the camera downconvert is as good as editing in HD and letting Media 100 do a re conform at the end? What mode do you shoot in to do the camera convert? Bit silly to use all that card space in HQ if you’re then down converting straight away. I prefer to shoot in SP (HDV 1440 x 1080i) go up to HD for editing then down convert. That way I get two hours twenty minutes from a total of 32 Gbs. The only problem is that I have to go on to HDV tape in between but that is no bad thing as I don’t want to fill up my drives pending editing.
Quality tests with all this (including making SD DVD’s) don’t seem much different but that of course is on my Sony monitor via component from Media 100. I agree with you, roll on the time (soon please!), when Media 100 resolve all these questions with a simple and effective way to ingest the EX files and media.

Chris, I have just tried again with ingesting HD footage from the EX1 via SDI. It’s true that there is an option setting in “audio in” for “embedded audio” which of course I choose but still I get the yellow blocks for audio when I try to acquire. When I uncheck both audio channela the video comes in OK.
I have the Pre Intel Mac G5, Media 100 version 12.1.1 (PPC) and of course the HDx board. How come you can take in the embedded audio and I can’t, assuming our kit is similar? You are talking about HD shot in HQ mode aren’t you? I believe (haven’t tried that) that my Media 100 will take embedded audio shot in SP mode.

Thanks Steve, will do. There do seem to be various new ideas emerging and no doubt all will become manifest in the fullness of time.
