You should be ok just capturing to a firewire drive. I have done that before with little problems. The issues really start to occur once you start editing and adding effects, color corrections etc while at the same time trying to go back out firewire for ether preview or laying back to tape.
Where you plan on travailing with it, you should really look into a Macbook Pro. You can add a second separate firewire bus by adding a firewire express card. Or better yet get a eSata card and use a esata drive. (eSata is way faster then firewire 800)

It really depends on the footage itself. If you could post a clip or even a still of the video it would be much easer to say.

What exactly have you tried, it is hard for us to say anything without knowing what you have tried.

USB will also cause you problems. USB works in bursts of data where firewire works using a constant flow of data. You are bound to have dropped frames and other issues.

More specifically Flip4Mac Pro the free plug in, will let you view, but does not have full export capabilities.

Well iDVD will not take pre encoded files from compressor like DVD SP will.

Who is everyone? Most likely they are intimidated by DVD SP.
DVD SP gives you much more control in creating your DVD menus. Besides I would NEVER give a client a DVD that is going to look like one there 10 year old kid just made. Now that does not mean that I never use templates, I created several of my own templates, some based off of a template and then altered greatly, and some built from scratch.

I don’t know why you are offering that to me, I am not the one who posted the question about the drives.
I said it was the only way to go for a macbook because there are no other option s that are better. I prefer esata as it keeps my camera/deck on a completely separate bus from the hard drive. Keeping them on separate busses prevents SO MANY potential problems.
