Then it is definitely not a problem with the keyboard. Does Command + Z work in other applications? If it does then it is most likely just a problem with FCP (thats what I am thinking it is because you said it worked for a while after trashing your preferences) If Command + Z does not work in other applications then I would say that something with ether your user preferences, or OS got jacked up.

I NEVER recommended reinstalling FCP in OS X I recommended reinstalling it in OS 9. You NEVER even mention you had a version of OS X running on the machine.
I am sorry for you but your setup is so OLD that I really don’t think that you will be able to find much help on the issues you are having. I used OS 9 just a hand full of times and hated it, it want until OS X came out that I fell in love with the mac.

If you mean FireWire ports YES. ALL Apple computers come with only one FireWire bus, even though they may have multiple “ports” there is still only one “Bus”. Think of it as a pipe, that is only so wide, the “pipe” or “bus” will only allow only so much through at a time. That is why is is HIGHLY recommended to keep your media drives on a separate bus then your camera/deck. With a Macbook Pro or a MacPro you have the ability to add an additional FireWire Card and thus a additional FireWire Bus, although there are also far better options then adding a additional FireWire Bus, like using eSata which is much faster then FireWire.
Several years back I was forced to do all my editing from a PowerBook using only FireWire hard drives on the one internal FireWire bus (my boss could not understand how getting a PCMCIA FireWire Card would be help). Typically capture went ok however at times I did get dropped frames. The bigger problems happened when laying back to tape for a master, because of the editing and effects added, it ment there was a bit more attempting to go thought the the Bus or Pipe at the same time, causing dripped frames. I would often have to make several attempts at mastering to tape before I got a clean master. Talk about a wast of time.

So many people think that big spendy equipment, will automatically make your end product look professional.
For example a couple of years back I worked for a guy that thought he was hot stuff because he owned a Varicam, yet his composition was greatly lacking, and he would also break the 180 degree rule with out knowing it, therefor his edits were confusing because people would suddenly change screen direction. (yes I know that it is OK to break the rules, but if you do you should at least be aware that you are doing it.

jpegs and having lots of rendering have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with codecs like the error message says. Besides a reinstall of the application douse not take that much time to do.
You should still try a reinstall.

No offense but not many young people are going have much experience on a machine that old and especially with an OS and version of FCP that old.

I don’t know anybody that keeps that would EVER have the need to keep that much data for current projects all on there media drives. Thats why you log and capture your footage so you can save the project file and recapture the footage again later when needed.
Besides drive space is dirt cheep these days.

You can only install the apps to the system drive. You really should keep them completely separate, I would make a separate boot volume for the new Final Cut Studio.
