Capturing in final cut
Is there a way I can capture and have the clip be compressed to a format that takes up less space, or will I have to capture and compress everything myself. Right now I’m just blazing through the gigabits with just the pure dv its capturing.

DV is one of the smallest if not the smallest native codec out there. At 13 Gigabytes an HOUR I’d consider getting yourself a new hard drive to capture with. With a $50 drive you could capture 9 hours of dv footage. With a $100 you can capture 38 hours of dv.
How much footage do you need to capture?

I’m not planning to capture too much and I agree I shouldn’t be complaining about dv. I was just curious if there was any other possibilities such as Shane suggested.
Some day in the not so distant future we will have hundred’s of terabytes in our computers and laughing that un-compressed video brought about storage problems.

I don’t know anybody that keeps that would EVER have the need to keep that much data for current projects all on there media drives. Thats why you log and capture your footage so you can save the project file and recapture the footage again later when needed.
Besides drive space is dirt cheep these days.
