NO, if you capture and edit in HDV then go back to tape in HDV there DV deck will NOT be able to play your tape.

Again NO. The tapes may be physically the same, but the format of the video on the tapes are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.
If recorded in HDV only a deck or camera capable of playing HDV will be able to play it.

Ok I think I understood your post it was a bit confusing.
Let me get things strait. You are shooting, capturing and editing in HDV, and you want to go back to tape in the DV format NOT in the HDV format.
To go back to tape like that you will need to nest your HDV sequence into a DV sequence, render and THEN lay to tape. This is because once you switch the camera to DV it will NOT accept the HDV signal from the computer.
The tapes are all basically the same so you don’t really need to worry about that at all.
Other options that you have are to shoot in DV mode in the camera, then capture in DV edit and lay back in DV. Or record in HDV but have the camera down-convert to DV on playback, then capture in DV edit and lay back to tape.
But like I said if you want to go back to tape in DV, then you will need to send it out from the computer in DV and that means creating a new sequence in DV and then nesting your HDV sequence in that then rendering.
The FX1 can only down-convert when sending video out of the camera via firewire, not when sending video to the camera via firewire.
I hope that makes things clear.

ummm NO, only intel macs can boot from a USB drive. Older PowerPC machines can ONLY boot from internal drives or firewire drives.
And I wold not be booting from a firewire drive and then be wanting to capture video over the same firewire bus. To big of a risk of having dropped frames.

FCP yes, but not all the added content, that you can choose to install in a completely different drive.
I have mine set up that way, makes reinstalling FCS so much faster.

XML’s can be the solution, but you also need to make sure that the format of video they are editing is supported by your old version of FCP. HDV and ProRes for example cannot be edited by FCP 4.5

Exactly, I only see the possibility of a ProRes encoding component being releases as a purchase.
