Problem with hooking it up via the DVi port is that the TV is going to act like a Computer monitor NOT like a video monitor.

Because you have hooked it up as a computer monitor it will NOT show in FCP as a it would if it was connected like a video monitor (ie like when you view via sending out to a video camera/deck)

Scan the drive with a program called WhatSize and see if it tells you anything. If that does not do the trick, then I suggest making an appointment at your making an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store, as trouble shooting this one over the web would be a bit to hard.

Again do the tapes actualy play on the cameras?
Will any tapes play in the cameras?
Do the tapes in question actualy play in anything?
I ask because I am trying to figure out if perhaps it is the camera not recording right (I have seen cameras record a tape that can ONLY be played back by the camera they have been recorded with)
If the tapes will not actualy play back from camera/deck conected directly to video monitor when other tapes will you may have a batch of bad tapes.

You cannot image a computer remotely.
What I would do is take an external drive and partition it into two partitions. Install just a basic OS onto one of the partitions and then on the other partition you create your master image by installing a OS, your apps and get all your settings in there, then freeze it.
Now what you will do is boot from your basic OS partition and use disk utility to image your master into the internal drive of the machine. Depending on how many machines you have you may want to have several of these external drives so you can be imaging more them one machine at a time.

Any unnecessary processes that will be there when you have not opened any application are so minimal that they will not make any difference.
As an example if you start up a machine and have nothing running except activity monitor, the thing using the most processes that is NOT system related will be activity monitor.
Besides what difference does it make Motion (the program you say you want to use) is GPU based NOT CPU based.

The video was shot and edited in HD, why now show it in HD?
Get a Apple TV and load the video on it and loan or rent it to your client (include a HDMI cable with it). All you have to do is encode the video for the apple TV and load it on there.
I have had good success converting 1080i60 into the highest quality that the Apple TV will play 720p24 (the Apple TV will only play 720p video if it is 24fps)
Now keep in mind that the Apple TV cannot loop a video, so if they need the video to repeat then you will need to create a video file that contains the same video several times so they can let it play for a while before staring it over.
The only time I have seen an Apple TV put out bad video is if the file was encoded poorly, or if the TV does a poor job of scaling the image.
Plus most other people at this trade show will probably be playing SD DVDs onto a HD display, if your client is showing actual HD video their product will stand out that much more.

Try deleting the SystemConfiguration folder found here
Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfigurationThen restart the computer. Upon restarting the system will build a new SystemConfiguration folder.
This folder contains some system preferences relating to internet connection.
If the issue continues you may want to to try reinstalling the OS.
