Well this one’s a doosy. I edit weddings. An entire wedding of 6 tapes won’t capture. It’ll read timecode as I fastward/rewind, but when press play on log and capture window for final Cut 6, it goes to o’s, no timecode, the preview disabled bars shows. If I put in another project’s DV tapes, the same exact type of tapes, they play fine. I’ve restarted the computer and deck, switched out all cables and tossed all final cut preferences in the preference folder. nothing works. any gelp would be appreciated, but as far as I can tell, it makes no sense.

Do the tapes play in the camera they were recorded with?

I appreciate that. weird thing is, half the tapes were with one camera, the other of this project were with another, neither are capturing. yet, again, I’ve tried the same make of DV tape for all my other projects I’ve tested since this problem, and they capture fine. it’s just the tapes for that day, two different cameras, for this one project that won’t capture. weird.

Again do the tapes actualy play on the cameras?

Will any tapes play in the cameras?

Do the tapes in question actualy play in anything?

I ask because I am trying to figure out if perhaps it is the camera not recording right (I have seen cameras record a tape that can ONLY be played back by the camera they have been recorded with)

If the tapes will not actualy play back from camera/deck conected directly to video monitor when other tapes will you may have a batch of bad tapes.

Do the tapes actualy play at all?

my cameras are at another location, so I’ll check that tomorrow. but, again, when I fast forward or rewind on final cut, it DOES show timecode so something appears to be there just by that, but what I don’t know. and then when I try to capture Now or batch capture through trickery it can’t find the time code that’s clearly there in fast forward. again, the weirdest thing I’ve come across in my 9 years working with this DV/ non linear programs.

    Hi guys,

Just putting this left field idea out there but could it be that the tapes were shot in “long play” not “short play”?

If the tapes don’t play in the camera either … it would mean your head on your camera’s have gone broken (Clogged as the techs call it)

I just ran into this problem.

HERE IS MY SOLUTION I FOUND:

Good luck, and hopefully this is not your issue … Because it does take time.

thanks to al for your help, but it just seems like it was some crazy quirk. the tapes play fine in another deck, a newer one. But again, every tape I checked from other projects using the exact same type of tape works in the “older” deck. it was just “something”, who knows what. yet another question for God when I get to heaven I guess. I’m sure it’ll be high on his list when I get there, right after he answers “the meaning of life”. SO problem solved with another deck. thanks again for your assistance.

actually I won’t have to ask God, there appears to be a simple solution. it seems my camera guys without telling me taped the project in HDV, which my old deck can’t play, but my new deck can. question solved, better communication with camera guys needed.
