Ok I just did some tests myself capturing in both imovie and FCP, and you are correct that the video codec is the same. However it looks like the audio is captured differently.
Different audio codecs easily explains the file size difference, as well as that is why FCP always wants to render files captured in iMovie when they are brought into FCP.

IMovie and FCP do not capture footage from DV Tapes using the same codec.

John you did not say where you are getting your .dv file from, but if I remember correctly .dv files are not in the DV25 codec.
FCP does not capture video to .dv files, I suggest converting them to a codec that is listed in the easy setups of FCP.

In system preferences go to start up disk there you can set what partition it will try and boot from first.

Yes you are correct I ment the system drive.

Yes that would be much better but the bigger issue hear is that he is on a MacBook not a MacBook Pro. So unfortunately he has no express card.
I personally will only edit from esata drives as I am unwilling to let my camera and drives share the same firewire bus. I have had to many issues with dripped frames on both capture and sending back to camera in the past to teach me that the camera and drives should be connected to completely different buses on the computer.

Sorry but it is never recommended to edit from the footage drive. That drive has plenty do do already, run the OS, run the application etc. When ever I have seen people attempting to edit from the system drive they get a lot of dropped frames while editing.

Like what was said the USB drive is the problem.
FW800 is the slowest connection on a drive that that will work with ProRes.

And your computer does NOT have FW800 on it.
So as I see it there is NOT really anything you can do on your machine that will let you edit ProRes with out any headaches.
The MacBook was not designed with the power that you need to edit video, in laptops you want to get a MacBook Pro.

Offer to accept half. After all it was YOU who lost the check. Also all the time you are putting into attempting to collect is time you could be putting to doing work for paying clients.

Sounds like the update somehow corrupted your OS. Try reinstalling the OS and running the update again.

Do NOT migrate. FCP installs some things into the OS that do not migate over. So if you migrate your FCP may act funny and you would then need to reinstall from the disks anyway.

Even if you could get the XML to open FCE will not be able to use HDV video captured in FCP unless it was captured in the Apple Intermediate Codec. FCE cannot use native HDV it will ONLY read Apple Intermediate.
