Correct me if I’m wrong on this part:
My old DV camera shoots in DV PAL (720×576 without aspect ratio) at 25 fps interlaced. So it’s 25i right?Either way, I want it to be 50 fps progressive (de-interlaced). I can do it easily in VirtualDub using the deinterlace filter with Yadif algorithm and “double frame rate” selected and it looks really nice and smooth. Just like it would if I watched the tape with the camera connected to the TV.
I want to do something like that on Vegas but I can’t. Whatever frame rate or field order I choose it will never “double” the frame rate of the footage, making that it always lose the smoothness.If I don’t find any solution I’ll just have to process all the footage with VirtualDub first. I was trying to avoid it since I’ll need a lot of free space for that.
Maybe that’s how I did it in the past… -

I tried a little trick and it kinda worked.
I added an effect that lets me select which color is transparent. I choose black so the little black pixels were almost all transparent.
On the track under I added the same clip but with a blur effect enough so that the black pixels wouldn’t be seen.So the “holes” in the top clip let the blurred pixels through.
It kinda works because not all the black pixels are really pure black. Some are brown. Another reason is because there are parts of the image that are darker, so those get transparent as well.Maybe with a lot of tweaking I can get just the black pixels to be transparent.
Or does someone has a better idea? (Maybe based on this)

You can only save as JPG or PNG.
PNG is lossless and JPG is at 90%-100% quality (judging by the file size).There isn’t any option for the quality of the snapshot.

Ok, I’ve figured out what’s wrong. In order for the BCC Deinterlace to work the project’s resolution and aspect ratio must match the clip. If not, the deinterlace won’t work at all.
The project I’m doing has other clips with different resolutions/aspect ratios so I’m going to create a new project just for the DV clips, deinterlace them, render, and add the rendered file to the main project.Thanks for helping me figure out what was wrong.

Oh my god! I can’t believe this! Using the firewire cable DID work!
I still don’t understand why Panasonic omitted such a thing from the manual and the camcorder itself. The Vegas capturing program is able to detect the scenes now.Thanks Danny Hays, for making me discover something new about my camcorder. Though the image quality is the same if I capture via firewire or USB (which I’ve been doing for like 4 or 5 years), the fact remains that using firewire is better because now Vegas can detect the scenes.

Like I said a few posts above, it is set and always was. The camcorder even has an option to show the date/time of the recorded scene that is playing in the playback mode. And all the scenes have their own different date (some days apart, other even months).

Yes, it looks exactly the same. But isn’t it weird that if the camcorder has a firewire output, why is not mention anywhere in the manual/box/camcorder? It only says DV. In my opinion I think this is some thingy invented by Panasonic to transfer data from one camcorder to another that happens to use a firewire connection. I bet if I use it to plug to the PC nothing will happen because the camcorder was not programmed for that.
I just looked more carefully to it and there’s even a sticker saying “DV data Streaming – USB 2.0 (HS)”. Clearly the user is supposed to do the capturing via USB.Still, I’m going to try to plug it to the PC via this firewire. I don’t have any cable here so I’ll have to buy one. I hope they aren’t to expensive lol. I’ll report what happened later this day.

Well, it is a 4 pin connector but both in the camcorder and in the manual only says “DV”. No mention of firewire. I just did a image search for a firewire cable and the connector sure looks like they fit in the camcorder. Don’t tell me after like 5 years I find out this thing has firewire lol.
As for your second question: I’m using using the external video capture program from Vegas (vidcap60). I put the camcorder in playback mode, plug in the USB cable and the program detects the camcorder. Then I just position the tape where I want to start to capture (either using the controls of the camcorder or on the program) and just press the capture button in the program.
