LOL! Nope, no sister. I think it helps that she’s an artist/musician so she is actually quite open to this type of work. And boy does her paying job rock!!! Especially when I’m not getting paid. 😉

I just wanted to give everyone a big shout out of thanks!!! It’s been a big help and learning experience on this type of technology.

I’m unfortunately not able to get everything all at once, and have to build my suite a little bit at a time. The good is that I’m not willing to sacrifice quality to save a few bucks. The bad is that sometimes technology comes and goes too quickly for me to be able to utilize it effectively. Fortunately, I’ve always received great advice from the members of the Cow, and this thread is a terrific example of that. I now feel confident to go forth and conquer!

The email is coming to you shortly, Bob! 😀

Well, the only manufacture I’ve found that offers just the external eSATA box with no drives pre-installed is Granite Digital. Now I’ve had great experience with their enclosures, but I’m wondering if anyone else has a specific eSATA box they like that DOESN’T come with drives. Frankly, I don’t need to spend the money on drives. I’d rather use that to go for better hardware, i.e. PCIe card, software etc. The searches I’ve done here have been very helpful, but they keep leading me back to places like Sonnet, LaCie, Maxx, etc, but no one is offering just the box! 🙁

March 7, 2008 at 7:33 pm in reply to: OT: Sick and still working on deadlines

I think the worst time I had sick and still had to work/edit was when I was on a shoot last year. It was a cold, but worse than the one I have now. We were out on a lake, shooting b-roll for a fishing product in 30 degree weather that felt like 0 degrees if when the wind blew. And it was always blowing! It was a Sunday, I think, and I had to drive back the next day from Georgia to South Carolina. Since I don’t work in a big office there’s just me, so I didn’t have to worry about getting anyone else sick – except on the shoot, and I think the only reason no one got sick from me there, was the heavy use of hand sanitizer, and keeping a good distance away. I got home, and finished the edit in a little over a day. I got over the cold after a few days, but still had a nasty cough for a month. Not fun. I’m taking a cue from that, and sleeping in all day tomorrow and sunday. It won’t give me as much time to finish my edit’s, but I still feel confident if I’m feeling better, I can actually get the work done.

I’m still not on the same wave length as everyone else as far as the Air is concerned. I don’t think it’s that bad at all. Granted, I don’t think it’s aimed at professionals at all. As it’s been noted the tech specs take care of that, but I don’t think that’s what Apple is gunning for with it. It seems to me that it’s geared more for business people who are constantly on the move, and don’t need tons of power, but do need more than an iPhone. That may be niche market to most of us, but I think it’s a valuable market that other than the iPhone, Apple’s not been directly involved with. Besides, it’s a Rev 1. It’s bound to have it’s short-comings like ever other first gen Apple product, or anyone else’s first gen product. It might be expensive too, but again, the people who would get the most use out of it, would be the ones who could afford it.

February 22, 2008 at 5:33 pm in reply to: Orbit ?

I sorta got an obit-esq effect in Motion 2, but it was very simple. Basically, I wanted to create my own count down for a slate. I had nive video of a 3D earth (just video not an actual 3D object) and I wanted the time to “obit” around the earth.
    • I animated the numeral “10” to simulate what the arch would look like going around the earth. Obviously, this would include a growing and shrinking of the size of the number as it “obits” the earth, and would move along a squashed oval type path.
    • Once I got the desired effect (timed to move at 1 second) I duplicated the layer so that now I have two layers of the numeral 10 “orbiting.”
    • Well, it’s sorta orbiting, because obviously there is no 3D space in Motion 2, so it was either just crossing over the earth or moving behind it. Not a mixture of both (over it when orbiting closest to us, and behind it when furthest away from us).
    • So, the next step was to sandwich the two numeral 10s around the earth. Getting there, but no there yet.
    • Now what you have to do is, without moving/deleting any of the keyframes, chop out the “behind” movement on the top layer, and chop out the “in front” movement of the bottom layer. This should give you the fake orbiting behavior you’re looking for.
    • Then I repeated with all the next numbers up to 2 so that I had my countdown.
Obviously there are limitations (the numerals can’t rotate the way your example gave, so there’s still a kinda flat feeling to the animation) but it can be “sorta” done. Hope this gives you some ideas.

Then again, I guess using Motion 3 is the way to go….

Maybe a good cost saver is to go the way of FCP express. If you’re used to FCP, then it should be a cinch to get up and running on, and I’m sure it’ll be a good stepping stone to cross your projects over eventually to FCP. I think the biggest thing that it’s missing is the MediaManager, but I wouldn’t see as how you’d need that right off the bat anyway. Just my .02 cents.
