Consumer product lines are not geared for professional level applications. Never have and never should. If you need the horsepower for professional level apps, get the professional level Macbook Pro (or Mac Pro). Regardless of if the consumer level products can run the apps, Apple has deliberately left them short of what the Pro apps need in order to run smoothly and efficiently. Especially when thinking on the long term. A Macbook is going to loose it’s ability to run newer versions of Pro Apps much quicker than the Macbook Pro is.

There are plenty of stories (here at the Cow as well) of those who’ve used consumer level products to run pro apps, but you’ll need to take note of the limitations that are involved. You will be crippled in some way if you decide to use a consumer computer to run professional applications.

I’m still not understanding all the fuss over the loss of FW400. The company I worked for in Seattle (and I carry this policy now) stopped using FW400 for capture, or video drive space well over 3 years ago. As mentioned in the earlier thread, there’s an ExpressCard slot if you need FW400 and there are adapters for FW400 to FW800 if you want to use that ExpressCard slot for something else. With all do respect to those who still use FW400 specifically, it’s time to move on. Mobile editing can be handled quite well with eSata as many manufactures offer hot-swappable solutions for this connectivity. The IoHD is FW800 so capture on the go with these new ‘books should be a snap.

Fact of the matter is that FW400 should have been put out to low-end consumer devices long ago to make way for FW800 to be the new standard. I’m sure there are some technically reasons (probably heat or power consumption) that kept this from happening sooner, but it’s happening now so kudos to Apple for finally taking these steps.

True, but it’d be nice to have it out of the box. The Cinema Display line has long needed an upgrade, and I wouldn’t be surprised if sometime before the holidays they release a new line for desktops.

The only thing I’m bummed about is that the display is built for use with the MacBooks and not for desktops. I’d love to get my hands on that for my desktop!

They should have stopped the FW400 ports years ago. They never pushed FW800 the way they should so getting rid of it now seems a bit odd, but I guess better late then never. I’m supposing they’re saying since there’s a ExpressCard slot, you can add FW400 if you really need it or better yet go to a eSata.

As far as the screen goes, I’m sure just like with the iPods someone is going to come out with a nice matte-screen protector so I’m not really bummed on that either.

I still think the MacBook Pro is worth the price increase for pro apps compared to the MacBook especially with the ExpressCard slot. That alone opens up a world of possibilities the MacBook can’t touch.

I think the only disappointing thing was the lack of Blu-Ray drives, but as Steve said the licensing is a nightmare. I kinda doubted they’d add it to their laptops without adding it to their desktops first anyway.

Just IMHO. 🙂

So my question is, assuming everything you’ve said is what’s going on, why not re-introduce it as a standalone app that’s not in FCS, and either lower the price of the FCS or expand the existing apps in the suite to compensate for the cost?

Walter, it sounds as though Color is not doing well independently? I thought that it was a really terrific program, though I have to admit I still send out projects to get their final mix and color correction at post houses with dedicated tools for that. (More because I can’t purchase the quality external hardware to do so than because of a lack of interest). Wait, did I just answer my own question……

I’ll have to get back to you on what type of video card it is. I do know that it has 2 DVI ports on the back, not 1 DVI and 1 VGA. Are their any I should be watching out for?

I made sure there weren’t any other windows open in FCP, and made sure that there were no other programs running as well.
