Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy Playback stops

I’ve got a friend who’s setup his own Final Cut Studio 2 suite on a refurbed G5 with 6 GIGs of ram, Photoshop CS3, and capture over FW only (he’s only using DV material because of the nature of videos) and 2 displays.

He’s got a problem that we initially thought was a firewire/device bug. We had a DV to Analog converter hooked up via FW so he could output for color safe on his monitors. If he switched programs while setup like this, and then tried to play the timeline, the playback would stop the video almost immediately, with the audio soon following. He no longer uses the converter box, using just the Cinema Desktop Full Screen for previews (color correct is not critical as these are not for broadcast, and he’s just dropping a Broadcast safe filter on everything before it goes to DVD).

His external drives are setup via eSata, and when he’s not capturing, he has nothing plugged into any of the FW ports. This was a refurb of the last G5 before they went Mac Pro, so after double checking we got him a PCIe card for the eSATA. Though one of the drives sometimes doesn’t mount (due to a faulty cable connection) a simple restart cures this (after of course checking the cable).

Well, the problem has showed up again. We’ve not trashed prefs yet, because turning off the Cinema Desktop Display Full Screen, fixes it. Has anyone else encountered this? I thought it a FW or converter box problem, but now it seems linked to either the drive (even though the drive has not dismounted and we can play source clips in the View window with no problem) or a software problem. Any thoughts are welcome! Thanks!

What type of video card is in the G5?

Do make sure all the windows aren’t overlapping and that there are no scroll bars in the canvas window.

I’ll have to get back to you on what type of video card it is. I do know that it has 2 DVI ports on the back, not 1 DVI and 1 VGA. Are their any I should be watching out for?

I made sure there weren’t any other windows open in FCP, and made sure that there were no other programs running as well.

    Thanks for the response!
