After doing further searching I thought I should add the following.

I think some of the images have not been scanned at a high enough resolution resulting in their poor quality. I tried upresisng them in photoshop as a cheat – this gives a small improvment but there is only so much you can improve.

Any tips??

Hi Pat,
Would love to hear how you go with your decision making. We’re in a simialr boat looking at the HD camera market – I lot of different choices, formats and budgets. We are looking at the XDCAM HD but also interested in the possibility of a smaller camera to hold us over for a while (HVX200 or similar). And then ther’s RED as well!! so many choices.

Does the Varicam itself have firewire???

In other words, can you import footage over firewire direct from the camera (Panasonic AJ-HD27F)???

about to produce my first two day shoot with the varicam and operator and hoping that at the end of the shoot we could quickly digitise the footage on site (will only be a couple of hours) using a Macbook Pro, before returning the camera to rental house.
Will be first project with such gear so any links/resources will be much appreciated

I’m about to undertake a similar project.

The amount of footage from both the Varicam and Z1 will be the same.

I am planning to
– capture Varicam footage over firewire to DVCPRO HD
– capture Z1 over firewire to 1080i HDV

Seems like the most logical/easy post flow would be to cut everything in DVCPRO HD.

What is the best way to cross convert my HDV to DVCPRO HD????

I’ve worked heaps in HDV but the addition of a Varicam on this project is a new and exciting challenge!
Any advice would be greatly apreciated.

Thanks Steve but this was one of the first things I checked.
I did plenty of searches and research before writing my post and read a bunch of Apple’s FCP documentation on HDV, timeocde breaks etc. I also tried out a bunch of things just in case it was FCP pilot error.

I just tested out a different tape from a different camera and it all works fine.

The problem tape was shoot on a Z1 and the OK tape on my own FX1. It seems that the Z1 is the problem but I can’t imagine why. The time code is consistent on the tape and there is no visible dropping of frames.
I still have tapes from the Z1 so I hope I can find a solution.

Has anyone encountered this scenario before?

so out of desperation I’m using the ‘make new clip’ setting
however using this means it’s drops (doesn’t digitise) around 7 seconds of footage between each clip!!

this is hopeless
any advice????

I’ve been batch capturing large chunks of Sony HDV footage for a while no problems until just recently – (Maybe after downloading the latest FCP software update!?!?!)

Now I can’t capture one continous HDV clip without is stopping with an error message. I’ve tried adjusting all the settings in user preferences but without any luck. The only way I can get FCP to digitise is by letting it create a new clip everytime a timecode break (HDV inherent) is found.

What has changed??????

As stated Apple is regularly updating it’s hardware – that’s why you should do the work and research and see what possibly might be arund teh corner before investing.

Now this aint hard – it’s a simple as clicking on one of the ‘macrumors’ sites and having a read.

The switch to Intel was promised a while ago and the possibility of the Powerbooks being updated has been talked about extensively – I’m not sure how anyone could be surprised or shocked at what has happened with Apples updates.

Yes I own my own small business, every dollar is important and I’ve been hanging out for a decent upgrade to the powerbooks. I was tempted by the last revision a few months back, but knew that i could hang out till January incase of something better being launched – enter Macbooks. This decision to wait was heavily based by what I was reading on these rumor sites and it’s paid off.

Having said that and being keen to pruchase, I might still wait till March to see how FCP runs on them and in case there are any quick revisions.
